The patronal festival of San Ferdinando di Puglia, blending faith, tradition, and community
The Solemn Celebrations in Honor of Saint Ferdinand the King represent the most cherished identity-defining event for the town of San Ferdinando di Puglia, located in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (known as the BAT) in the heart of northern Apulia, along the Ofanto valley. Every year, at the end of August, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, King Ferdinand III of Castile, for days dedicated to faith, tradition, and togetherness.
The saint's liturgical feast day falls on May 30th, but it is at the end of summer that the town experiences the most intense moment of popular devotion. Religious celebrations take place in the Mother Church of Saint Ferdinand the King, featuring holy masses, a preparatory triduum, and a solemn Eucharistic concelebration presided over by the Bishop of the Archdiocese of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie. The emotional heart of the festival remains the procession of the Sacred Effigy of the patron saint, which travels through the main city streets accompanied by a brass band and the moving participation of the faithful.
Alongside the religious events, the festivities offer a rich secular program that transforms the center of San Ferdinando di Puglia into a stage of lights. Traditional luminarie (light displays) illuminate the main street and squares, while Piazza della Costituzione hosts band concerts and evening musical performances. The Market Area hosts the funfair, food stalls, and grand firework displays that, with traditional pyrotechnics, close the festive evenings by lighting up the Apulian sky.
Organized by the Saint Ferdinand the King Patronal Festival Committee in collaboration with the parish and the municipal administration, the Solemn Celebrations combine the spiritual dimension with a grand village festival. These are days when the local community rediscovers its roots, the civic value of hospitality, and a sense of belonging, attracting numerous visitors from neighboring towns in the BAT and Capitanata regions.
The dates for the 2026 edition have been confirmed: the Solemn Celebrations in Honor of Saint Ferdinand the King will take place from August 28th to 30th, 2026, preceded by the patron's liturgical feast day on May 30th. The detailed program of religious and secular events, including service times, concerts in Piazza della Costituzione, the procession, and fireworks, will be announced by the Patronal Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
As per tradition, the days will combine moments of devotion in the Mother Church of Saint Ferdinand the King with the grand village festival, featuring illuminations, a brass band, gastronomic events at the Market Area, and the concluding fireworks.
Religious events are concentrated in the Mother Church of Saint Ferdinand the King; concerts and civic events enliven Piazza della Costituzione, while the funfair and fireworks take place at the Market Area of San Ferdinando di Puglia (BT).
The solemn celebrations take place every year at the end of August. The 2026 edition is scheduled from August 28th to 30th.
Religious celebrations, processions, and square performances are free to attend.
San Ferdinando di Puglia can be reached by car via the SS16 and A14 highways (Cerignola Est or Canosa exits), and by train via the Ofanto valley railway lines.
