The international social cinema exhibition in Vico Equense
The Social World Film Festival is an international social cinema exhibition that brings Vico Equense to life every summer. Located on the Sorrento Peninsula in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania, the festival offers eight days of screenings, meetings, masterclasses, and award ceremonies. It highlights cinema as a tool for civic engagement, with a special focus on emerging authors and those just beginning their cinematic journey.
The event was established in 2011 by director and producer Giuseppe Alessio Nuzzo, who remains its artistic director. Over more than fifteen editions, the festival has become a landmark for independent cinema in Southern Italy, showcasing a mix of premieres, debut works, short films, and documentaries from dozens of countries. Over the years, the red carpet in Vico Equense has welcomed prominent Italian and international actors and directors alongside young filmmakers presenting their first competition entries.
The sixteenth edition took place from July 5 to 12, 2026, featuring the theme of the Embrace as a tribute to Claudia Cardinale, the festival's honorary president. The theme inspired the official poster, a retrospective created with Rai Teche, and a photography exhibition curated in collaboration with the Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Cineteca Nazionale. The competition featured 142 works from 42 countries across nine competitive sections.
The heart of the festival is the Chiostro delle Santissime Trinità e Paradiso, which transforms into one of Southern Italy's most evocative open-air cinemas each summer. Events are also held at other iconic locations in the historic center:
Beyond screenings, the program includes free masterclasses and workshops for those under 36, pitching sessions, a European film market, immersive virtual reality experiences, the 'Giovani Visionari' project, a UNICEF panel, and a professional development course for journalists. Daily live broadcasts are available on the official website and the festival's YouTube channel, allowing audiences to follow the event remotely.
All events are free to attend. While some are open-access, others require a free reservation via the official website, with a written confirmation to be presented at the entrance. The organization has long prioritized sustainability, utilizing electric shuttle vehicles, recycled cardboard sets, and incentives for those who reach the venues via public transport.
The town of Vico Equense overlooks the Gulf of Naples, just a few kilometers from Sorrento and a little over half an hour from Pompeii. The setting—with its narrow alleys, cloisters, and sea-view terraces—is an integral part of the experience. During the festival, the historic center fills with crowds, making the event a defining appointment for the entire Sorrento Peninsula and one of the most popular summer showcases for cinema in Campania.
