About Snail Festival

Every year in mid-August, Castrocielo celebrates its Snail Festival in Piazza Umberto I: an evening of culinary delights dedicated to traditional Ciociarian snail recipes, including bruschetta, pasta with sauce, and live music. The gastronomic festival, organized by the Pro Loco, is paired with the "Snail on the Run – Run in Castrocielo" race, a 10 km competitive run that winds through the village before sunset.

The Castrocielo Snail Festival

In the village of Castrocielo, in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Lazio region's Ciociaria, the first half of August is dedicated to one of the summer's most beloved events: the Snail Festival. Every year, Piazza Umberto I comes alive with stalls, long tables, and music for an evening that blends local culinary tradition with a festive atmosphere, drawing residents and visitors from neighboring towns.

Snails on the table, the traditional way

The star of the show is the snail, prepared according to recipes passed down through Ciociarian families. The festival menu features the great classics of local cuisine:

  • Snails in tomato sauce, slow-cooked in a rich tomato base;
  • Pasta with snails, a first course that pairs homemade pasta with the traditional savory sauce;
  • Bruschetta with snails, to start the evening with a bold and flavorful bite.

The stalls, managed by the Pro Loco of Castrocielo together with local producers, remain open until late, accompanied by live music and entertainment in the square.

The Snail on the Run – Run in Castrocielo

The gastronomic festival is accompanied by the "Snail on the Run – Run in Castrocielo" race, which debuted in 2025 and is organized by the Polisportiva Ciociara Antonio Fava. It is a competitive 10 km race, consisting of two laps of just over five kilometers each, starting from Via San Rocco in the late afternoon. Before the main event, there is a non-competitive mini-sprint reserved for children and teenagers aged 4 to 15.

A blend of flavor and sport

The formula that combines running and the festival makes this event appealing to a diverse audience: from running enthusiasts who travel from across the province of Frosinone and the rest of Lazio for a regional-level race, to food lovers looking to rediscover a humble yet iconic dish like the snail. All this within the setting of a Lazio village at the foot of the mountains, amidst history, nature, and the authentic flavors of Ciociaria.
