The non-competitive cycling tour through the mountains of the Comino Valley
Slow Ride Acquafondata is a non-competitive cycling tour that, every year in June, transforms the small town of Acquafondata, in the province of Frosinone, into the starting point for a collective ride through the woods, dirt tracks, and landscapes of the Lazio Apennines. The event is organised by ASD MTBike Cassino with the patronage of the municipalities of Acquafondata and Viticuso, on the edge of the picturesque Comino Valley.
The course covers approximately 30 kilometres, with 650 metres of elevation gain and medium difficulty, crossing the territory of Viticuso as well as Acquafondata. The start is set in Piazza dei Caduti, in the town centre. Mountain bikes, e-bikes, and gravel bikes are permitted: helmets are mandatory, and two refreshment stops are planned along the route to tackle the climbs with the right energy.
The philosophy of the event is captured in its name: pedal slowly to enjoy the scenery, the company, and the rhythm of nature. There are no rankings or stopwatches: the goal is to experience the territory, rediscover mountain roads and paths, and share a day of gentle sport among friends, families, and cycling enthusiasts.
Slow Ride Acquafondata represents the evolution of the historic Cicloturistica del Birraio (Brewer's Cycling Tour), an event that has won over cycling enthusiasts from the Cassino area and Ciociaria over the years. The event has gradually expanded its audience, growing from the hundred participants of the first editions to more substantial numbers, leading to the renewal of its name and format.
In addition to the ride, Slow Ride Acquafondata dedicates ample space to socialising. Upon returning, participants find a final pasta party and an area dedicated to food, beer, and socialising, while children can have fun in a dedicated kids' area with entertainers. It is a way to turn a morning on a bike into a true village festival open to everyone.
Nestled in the upper Ciociaria, on the borders between Lazio, Abruzzo, and Molise, the municipality of Acquafondata is a mountain village that offers fresh air and wide views over the Meta Mountains and the Mainarde range. Cycling in these places means crossing a lesser-known part of Lazio, made of small towns, rural traditions, and still-pristine nature, perfect for slow cycle tourism.
The 2026 edition of Slow Ride Acquafondata took place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with a meeting at 7:30 AM in Piazza dei Caduti and departure by 9:00 AM. The route of approximately 30 km, with 650 metres of elevation gain and medium difficulty, crossed the territories of Acquafondata and Viticuso, open to MTB, e-bikes, and gravel bikes. Participants received a race pack, two refreshment stops along the route, a final pasta party, and access to an area dedicated to food, beer, and socialising, with an animated children's area.
Acquafondata can be reached by car from Cassino (about 20 km) heading up towards the Meta Mountains; the nearest motorway exit is Cassino, on the A1 Rome-Naples. The start is in Piazza dei Caduti, in the town centre.
Online registration costs 15 euros on the mtbikecassino.it website or 20 euros on-site until the start. Every 5 online registrations from the same association entitle the group to one free registration.
Helmets are mandatory. Bring a bike in good condition (MTB, e-bike, or gravel), technical clothing, and a desire to pedal at a leisurely pace.
