An evening under the stars in Scontrone, featuring jazz, telescopes, and the flavors of Abruzzo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Sipario is the summer event that, in the heart of August, breathes life into Scontrone, a charming village in the Upper Sangro Valley, located in the mountainous heart of Abruzzo. Conceived by the local administration and organized by the "La Monna" community cooperative, the event turns Piazza Sangro into an elegant open-air lounge. It is designed to encourage a slow, poetic appreciation of the village, perfectly timed with the night of San Lorenzo and its falling stars.
The heart of the evening is the square, furnished with traditional Abruzzese blankets used as seating, designer furniture, and deliberately soft lighting. In this intimate space, telescopes allow guests to observe the sky and stars while live jazz music provides the soundtrack for the night. A literal curtain (sipario), made entirely from traditional Abruzzese blankets, separates the magical, quiet atmosphere of the square from the more dynamic and festive area of Via Roma.
The day is punctuated by activities that celebrate the roots of the region. With "Ricamando sogni d'Abruzzo" (Embroidering Dreams of Abruzzo), participants embroider words in the local Abruzzese dialect onto small placemats, focusing on themes of stars and local heritage. The "Sdijuno" offers a chance to rediscover the traditional mid-morning peasant meal—a dish from rural Abruzzese culture that the University of Teramo has recognized as a true "elixir of long life." There is also a workshop for children dedicated to stars and painting.
While the square maintains its starry tranquility, the nearby Via Roma lights up with food trucks, refreshment points, and a DJ set that brings the evening to a festive close. Throughout the village alleys, spontaneous art displays inspired by the night of San Lorenzo make Sipario an immersive experience, perfect for strolling through evocative corners and enjoying views of the mountains of the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park.
Situated along the Sangro River, Scontrone is an authentic village in the Abruzzese Apennines, nestled in a landscape of gorges and mountains. Sipario is the perfect opportunity to discover this corner of the province of L'Aquila in a new light, where rural tradition meets contemporary art and the wonder of the starry sky, during one of the most evocative evenings of the Abruzzese summer.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Sipario in Scontrone have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the event usually takes place in August, around the night of San Lorenzo, with an evening under the stars in Piazza Sangro featuring jazz music, telescopes, rural traditions, and street food. The detailed program will be published by the organizers during the summer.
