The choral review of Val Baganza between the Parma Apennines and Trentino
In the heart of the Parma Apennines, where villages cling to the slopes of Val Baganza, Cantando per la Valle comes to life, a choral singing review that makes popular music a shared cultural heritage. The event takes place in the Municipalities of Calestano, Felino, and Sala Baganza, in the province of Parma, and brings the voices of mountain choirs from the Parma Apennines and Trentino into the churches and oratories of the area.
The common thread of the review is the meeting between different choral groups united by the same passion for popular singing. Alongside local groups, guest choirs from the Trentino valleys perform, engaging in a musical dialogue that intertwines repertoires, dialects, and traditions of the Italian mountains. Mountain choral singing, made up of male voices and a cappella harmonies, is celebrated here as a common language capable of uniting distant communities around an idea of friendship, memory, and identity.
The strength of Cantando per la Valle also lies in the venues that host it: the Parish Church of Calestano, the Oratory of the Rocca in Sala Baganza, and the parish church of San Michele Tiorre, spaces with intimate acoustics that enhance the purity of the voices. The audience thus travels from village to village, discovering corners of the Parma Apennines often off the main tourist routes.
The review is the result of the collaboration of numerous local associations: the Circolo Sociale Coruzzi, promoter of the initiative, together with the ANA sections of Calestano and Felino, the Parish of San Michele Tiorre, and the Pro Loco associations of Calestano, Felino, and Sala Baganza. The patronage of the three Municipalities testifies to the event's deep roots in the life of the valley. All events have free admission, without reservation, in full accordance with the popular and welcoming spirit of the festival.
The 2026 edition of Cantando per la Valle brought four choirs to Val Baganza, united by their passion for mountain folk singing: the Coro Armonie dei Colli from Felino, the Coro Eco del Montagnana from Felino, the Coro Roen from Don (Trento), and the Coro Valbronzale from Ospedaletto Valsugana (Trento). Three events, all with free admission, were held in the churches and oratories of the area over the weekend of May 15 and 16.
The final concert on Saturday, May 16 at 8:45 PM in the Parish Church of San Michele Tiorre, with all four choirs gathered, and the encounter between the choral traditions of the Parma Apennines and Trentino.
