The most delicious fried pastry festival in the Garfagnana, in the village of Sillicano
The Sillicano Bomboloni Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events of the summer in the Garfagnana. It takes place in Sillicano, a charming hamlet in the Municipality of Camporgiano, in the Province of Lucca, perched on a river terrace among chestnut woods at an altitude of over 600 meters. Now in its 49th edition in 2026, the festival is dedicated to the bombolone, the classic fried and sugared pastry of the Tuscan tradition, prepared according to the local village recipe and served hot, straight from the fryer.
Sillicano is one of the most picturesque and scenic villages in the Camporgiano area. Mentioned as early as the 10th century, the village preserves medieval-style houses adorned with carved portals and courtyards paved in pietra serena, while the church dedicated to Saint Nicholas houses a valuable historic organ. According to local legend, the village's name is linked to the passage of the Roman consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla, who was halted by snow while crossing the Garfagnana. This setting of stone and chestnut trees provides the perfect backdrop for a festival that feels like home and community.
The Bomboloni Festival is not just about indulgence; it is, above all, a gathering point for the entire valley community. The program alternates between stalls serving fried pastries and a wide range of social activities, including dinner served through the village streets and an unmissable charity event: the fun run supporting AIL (Italian Association against Leukemia). The evening concludes with the joy of the tombola in the square, among families, children, and visitors from neighboring towns.
In an era of large commercial events, the Sillicano Bomboloni Festival remains a genuine local fair, run by village volunteers and rooted in the life of the Garfagnana. It is the ideal opportunity to discover a village you might not otherwise stumble upon, savor a simple yet irresistible treat, and experience the authentic atmosphere of a Tuscan community celebration in the mountains of the Lucchese Apennines.
The 49th Sillicano Bomboloni Festival takes place on Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26, 2026, in the village square, a hamlet of Camporgiano in the Garfagnana. The usual program combining indulgence, sport, and solidarity is confirmed: fried pastry stalls, a charity run for AIL, and a village dinner.
The program is repeated on both days of the event. Further details will be communicated by the organizers in the days leading up to the festival.
