About Sillabe di Lirica

Sillabe di Lirica is the festival that has brought the Teatro Garibaldi in Rio nell'Elba, in the Municipality of Rio, Province of Livorno, back to life. Curated by Maestro Mario Menicagli, it offers a journey through operatic masterpieces using an original format: the storytelling of the plot and its deeper meanings is interwoven with the performance of the most famous arias. Four events between April and May, from La Traviata to Turandot, designed to introduce the public to melodrama in an accessible and engaging way, with free admission.

Opera returns to the island of Elba

In Rio nell'Elba, in the Municipality of Rio, Province of Livorno, the historic Teatro Garibaldi has found its voice again thanks to Sillabe di Lirica, a festival dedicated to the great operatic repertoire. For too long, the theatre had remained silent: this series has brought it back to the heart of the cultural, social, and human life of the local community, rekindling, as Deputy Mayor Mattia Guerrini stated, "a light that had been dim for too long."

An original format: telling the story of opera

The heart of Sillabe di Lirica is the formula devised by Maestro Mario Menicagli, the festival's curator. Each evening is not just a concert: it is a narrative journey where the plot and its deeper meanings are interwoven with the performance of the most famous pieces from each opera. It is a way to introduce even those unfamiliar with the genre to melodrama, guiding the audience through the stories, emotions, and music of the great Italian composers.

The four masterpieces on the bill

The festival took place between April and May with four events, each dedicated to a title from the great repertoire:

  • La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, the inaugural opera that reopened the theatre;
  • Il Trovatore, also by Verdi, with its intense and overwhelming drama;
  • La Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, a masterpiece of passion and tragedy;
  • Turandot by Puccini, an unfinished opera that combines exotic atmospheres, drama, and hope, chosen to close the series.

For the last two events, an encore performance was scheduled, a sign of the public's enthusiasm.

A popular festival

The success exceeded expectations: the four events drew over 500 people in total, a remarkable result for a small village theatre with limited capacity. The initiative, organized by the Municipality of Rio, confirmed how culture and live music can be a driving force for cohesion for the communities of the island of Elba, well beyond the summer tourist season.

A theatre reclaiming its role

Sillabe di Lirica is part of a broader revival of the Teatro Garibaldi, which has continued with other cultural events, from book presentations to musical performances. For those visiting Elba in spring, it is a precious opportunity to discover an authentic and cultured side of the island, far from the beaches and immersed in its cultural heritage.
