The widespread Christmas village of San Giuseppe Vesuviano, featuring markets, lights, and shows until Epiphany
SGV Christmas – Lights, Sounds and Magic is the Christmas festival with which the Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, accompanies the community from the beginning of December until Epiphany. From the lighting of the grand tree in Piazza Garibaldi on December 6th to January 6th, the center and the peripheral districts of the Vesuvian town transform into a large Christmas village made of lights, colors, and participation. It is not a program concentrated in a single square: it is a widespread Christmas, designed for the locals but also for visitors from neighboring towns, with free events distributed throughout the city.
The symbolic moment is the inauguration in Piazza Garibaldi, in the late afternoon during the first days of December: school choirs open the evening, then the grand tree is lit, and the square fills with a spectacle of lights, artists, and magic. From that moment, the square becomes the reference point for the event, with illuminations lit every evening, scenic installations, and events dedicated to families.
Commerce is part of the identity of San Giuseppe Vesuviano, and Christmas brings it to the stage. Alongside the Christmas markets, with their craft stalls and gift ideas, the program includes the Earth Market, dedicated to typical products and the food and wine excellence of Campania: local Vesuvian produce, preserves, cheeses, and festive sweets such as struffoli, roccocò, and mostaccioli. It is the perfect opportunity to meet local producers and take home a piece of the Vesuvian land.
An important part of the program is reserved for the little ones. The Kids Xmas Tour brings entertainment and workshops to the various neighborhoods, while the most anticipated event is The Landing of the Elves: for one morning, the square turns into a fantasy world, with elves, hot air balloons, flying machines, and family activities. The picture is completed by Santa's Village, neighborhood bingo games, and the living nativity scene, which brings the great Neapolitan nativity tradition to the streets.
The soundtrack of the festival is entrusted to a deliberately popular and varied musical calendar: concerts by artists from the Neapolitan scene at Rione Belvedere, gospel choirs in churches and neighborhoods, starting with the one in Santa Maria La Scala, Christmas ensembles, jazz evenings, tribute bands, and musical flash mobs by local schools. Added to these are roving performances and street artists who animate the center and the suburbs during the festive weekends.
The choice of the municipal administration, reiterated every year, is not to concentrate everything in the center: the Christmas in the Neighborhood evenings, local tastings, and roving entertainment bring events to Santa Maria La Scala, the Rione Belvedere, and the more peripheral areas, with initiatives designed for all ages, from the elderly to children. The festival is promoted by the Municipality with the support of the Metropolitan City of Naples.
With just over thirty thousand inhabitants, San Giuseppe Vesuviano rises about twenty kilometers east of Naples, at the foot of the volcano, and is one of the municipalities of the Vesuvius National Park. Its most famous monument is the Sanctuary of San Giuseppe, in the heart of the city, while the surrounding territory — Ottaviano, Terzigno, Poggiomarino, Palma Campania — offers vineyards, Lacryma Christi wineries, and trails that climb toward the crater. A stop during the holidays allows you to combine the Vesuvian Christmas with the discovery of an area that lives between archaeology, the volcano, and Campanian gastronomic tradition.
For the 2025-2026 holidays, the Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano created a month-long program, from December 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026, with the support of the Metropolitan City of Naples. The stated goal was to transform the city into a large, widespread Christmas village, capable of reaching even the peripheral neighborhoods.
The festival opened on December 6 at 5:30 PM in Piazza Garibaldi with the event The Magic of Christmas Begins: city school choirs, the lighting of the grand tree, and a show of lights, artists, and magic dedicated to families and children.
Mayor Michele Sepe explained that the Administration wanted a Christmas capable of speaking to the entire community, with events in all neighborhoods suitable for every age. Councilor Andrea Ementato highlighted a program designed to enhance the sense of belonging, while Councilor Valentina Scudieri emphasized the opportunity to support the city's commercial fabric.
The calendar alternated Christmas markets and the Earth Market with typical Campanian products, the Kids Xmas Tour, the living nativity scene, roving performances in the center and suburbs, neighborhood tastings, and a series of musical appointments, until the closing on Epiphany.
The Municipality released the program as a calendar spread across the entire municipal territory: dates and times of individual appointments were updated progressively on the official channels of the Authority.
San Giuseppe Vesuviano is located about 20 kilometers east of Naples. By train, it is served by the Circumvesuviana (Naples-Sarno line), with the station just a few minutes' walk from the center. By car, you can arrive via the SS268 Vesuvius state road, which has a dedicated exit for the town, or from the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway. During the festive weekends, it is advisable to leave the car in the neighboring streets and reach Piazza Garibaldi on foot.
The hub of the event is Piazza Garibaldi, where the tree is lit and the main shows are concentrated. Other events are distributed throughout the city: Piazza Elena d'Aosta (seat of the Town Hall), the Rione Belvedere, the Santa Maria La Scala district, and the peripheral areas.
All events have free admission. The complete program is released by the Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano and local media in the area in the days preceding the lighting of the tree: it is advisable to check dates and times on the official channels of the Municipality, as some outdoor initiatives may be moved in case of bad weather.
The weekends and the days around the Immaculate Conception, Christmas, and Epiphany are the richest in events. For those traveling with children, the event not to be missed is the morning of the Landing of the Elves. Warm clothing is essential: almost all activities take place outdoors.
