Canosa's Christmas treat in the spotlight, featuring wooden stalls and festive markets
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
During the Immaculate Conception holiday period, Canosa di Puglia transforms into a showcase for its most beloved confectionery tradition. The Sfogliatella Festival is dedicated to the Canosa sfogliatella, known in the local dialect as "sfegghjète", a Christmas pastry passed down through families for generations. The event brings Piazza Vittorio Veneto, in the heart of the city, to life with wooden stalls where local bakeries, pastry shops, and restaurants offer their sfogliatelle for tasting.
The Canosa sfogliatella is listed among the Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT) of the Puglia Region. It is a rose-shaped pastry made from a white wine-scented dough, filled with a rich mixture of toasted almonds, grape jam (or mustard), raisins, cinnamon, cloves, cocoa, and citrus zest. It offers an intense, spiced flavor that captures the essence of Christmas and Canosa's identity, and in recent years, it has even been reimagined in gelato and pizza variations.
The festival is more than just tastings: throughout the event, visitors can enjoy shows, live music, DJ sets, and children's entertainment, creating an atmosphere of joy and community for all ages. At the same time, the Villa Comunale hosts the Christmas Markets, featuring dozens of stalls selling local products and handicrafts, completing the festive experience in the city center.
The Sfogliatella Festival is a young event: the first edition was held in 2023, and the second in December 2025. It is organized by Pro Loco Canosa in collaboration with the Municipality of Canosa di Puglia, as part of regional initiatives to promote the area. The stated goal is to boost gastronomic tourism while preserving the traditions and cultural roots of this Daunian city.
An ancient city in northern Puglia, Canosa boasts an extraordinary archaeological heritage, from Daunian hypogea to Roman ruins. The Sfogliatella Festival fits into a broader offering that combines culture, history, and gastronomy, inviting visitors from across Puglia to discover the historic center during the most magical time of the year.
Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the event is traditionally held during the Christmas season, around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
The Sfogliatella Festival of Canosa di Puglia returns, as per tradition, during the Christmas period in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, with wooden stalls dedicated to tasting the Canosa sfogliatella and Christmas Markets in the Villa Comunale. At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not been made public: this page will be updated as soon as Pro Loco Canosa and the Municipality release the official calendar.
