The San Giuseppe pastry and local crafts in the heart of Misiliscemi
The Sfinciotello Festival is one of the most cherished gastronomic traditions in Misiliscemi, a young municipality in the Province of Trapani, Sicily, established in 2021 from the union of eight districts (including Palma, Pietretagliate, and Salinagrande). The festival takes place in the Palma district, in Piazza G. Montalto, and celebrates the sfinciotello, a local variation of the famous sfincia di San Giuseppe, a quintessential Sicilian pastry linked to the March 19th feast day.
The sfinciotello is a soft fritter, similar to a zeppola, filled with rich ricotta cream and garnished with chocolate chips, crushed pistachios, orange zest, and candied cherries. Its name derives from the Latin spongia (sponge), referring to its soft, porous dough. Traditionally prepared for the feast of San Giuseppe—the foster father of Jesus and a symbol of fatherhood—this pastry is the star of bakeries throughout the Trapani area during the entire month of March.
During the festival evening, stalls set up in Piazza G. Montalto offer tastings of the sfinciotello in a festive atmosphere that draws residents and visitors from neighboring districts. Complementing the culinary delights, a local craft exhibition showcases the region's expertise, featuring traditional products and artisanal creations.
The Sfinciotello Festival is part of the rich calendar of celebrations for the Patron Saint San Giuseppe, organized by the Municipality of Misiliscemi in collaboration with local parishes. The religious and secular program spans several days in March, culminating on March 19th with a solemn procession, fireworks, and the traditional vampa, the large devotional bonfire typical of Western Sicily. The festival serves as the convivial and gastronomic heart of this popular celebration.
The 2026 Sfinciotello Festival took place on March 18, 2026, starting at 9:00 PM in Piazza G. Montalto in the Palma district of Misiliscemi (Province of Trapani). The event, a gastronomic highlight of the celebrations in honor of San Giuseppe, the town's patron saint, combined sfinciotello tastings with a local craft exhibition.
The evening served as a prelude to the solemn day of March 19th, featuring Holy Mass, the handing over of the keys, the procession, and fireworks. A free shuttle bus service was available during the festivities.
