The festival of handmade gnocchi in the medieval village of Alta Tuscia
In the heart of summer, when the hills of Alta Tuscia are tinged with the warm colors of August, the village of Sermugnano celebrates its most delicious tradition with the Gnocchi Festival. The event, now in its nineteenth edition, takes place on the weekend around Ferragosto and transforms the streets and squares of the ancient town into a place of celebration where the scent of ragรน and freshly dressed gnocchi lingers late into the night.
Sermugnano is a small hamlet of the Municipality of Castiglione in Teverina, in the province of Viterbo, in northern Lazio, on the border with Umbria. Perched on a hill overlooking the Tiber valley, the village preserves the structures of its ancient castle and several churches, witnesses to a centuries-old history. It is in this setting, in the intimate Piazza Castello, that the Sermugnano Historical Center Association organizes the festival every year, with the aim of enhancing and promoting the cultural, artistic, and human heritage of this small center in the Lazio hinterland.
The signature dish of the festival is naturally the strictly handmade gnocchi, prepared according to local peasant traditions and served with rich, savory sauces. Alongside the gnocchi, the food stand offers other local dishes in a menu that combines authenticity with generous portions, in the style of traditional village fairs. The kitchen opens in the evening, and the square fills with long tables where residents and visitors share dinner in the open air.
The Gnocchi Festival is not just about good food: the evenings are marked by briscola tournaments, traditional games, music, and moments of joy that involve both adults and children. It is a community-focused celebration where the convivial spirit counts as much as the steaming plate, and where the many visitors who reach the village find the sincere welcome of a small town that, for a few days, becomes the center of life in Alta Tuscia.
The Sermugnano Gnocchi Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover a little-known corner of Lazio, combining the goodness of home cooking with the charm of a town that proudly guards its identity.
The Sermugnano Gnocchi Festival returns from August 14 to 16, 2026 for its nineteenth edition, upholding the tradition of the Ferragosto weekend. As every year, the Sermugnano Historical Center Association sets up the food stand in the village's Piazza Castello, where handmade gnocchi are served with traditional local sauces, accompanied by other regional specialties.
The three evenings, in addition to the food, feature briscola tournaments, traditional games, music, and moments of conviviality open to everyone. The detailed program with times and events is usually released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event via the village's website and social media channels.
