Memory, faith, and the flavors of the sea at the Marina di Conca dei Marini
In Conca dei Marini, one of the smallest municipalities on the Amalfi Coast, in the province of Salerno, the relationship with the sea is not just a tourist postcard: it is a family memory. For centuries, people here lived by fishing, navigation, and maritime trade, and almost every household had someone who went to sea. Every July 23rd, the Sea Festival, promoted by the Municipality of Conca dei Marini together with the Pro Loco, brings the community back to the small Marina di Conca for an event that intertwines faith, remembrance, and conviviality.
The heart of the day is a simple gesture. After the Holy Mass that opens the evening, a laurel wreath is laid in the sea in memory of all those who lost their lives among the waves. It is a rite of gratitude and respect towards the «fallen of the sea»: fishermen, sailors, people who left this stretch of coast and never returned. There is no emphasis, no grand staging; there is a quiet moment, just a few meters from the water, which is both a civil commemoration and a popular devotion. For those attending for the first time, it is likely the most powerful image of the entire festival.
Once the commemorative part is over, the festival changes tone. On the Marina, the focus shifts to the tasting of cuoppo di pesce (fried seafood), offered by the Pescheria CICA with the collaboration of the village's restaurants: local catch, fried fish served in the classic paper cone, people in line, and outdoor tables just a stone's throw from the shoreline. It is the most direct way to understand what «seafood cuisine» means here, made of anchovies, squid, and bluefish rather than elaborate dishes. The formula, repeated year after year, remains deliberately popular and accessible to everyone.
Over the years, the Sea Festival has added an increasingly curated cultural program to its ritual part. In 2026, the evening hosted «Libecciata al Capo di Conca», a show by the Odysea company based on the narrative work Trittico by Andrea Carrano, with musical adaptation and choreography by Damiano and Michela Andretta: words, music, and tradition to tell the story of the village's identity. The closing was entrusted to the live music of Damiano e i Song 'ro Sud, blending Neapolitan song and tammurriata rhythms. In previous editions, the lineup had already included creative workshops for children using recycled materials, carried out with the Plastic Free association, and choral concerts of Campanian folk music.
The village is worth a visit even outside the festival evening. Conca dei Marini is the home of the Emerald Grotto, the sea cave with green reflections made famous in the 1930s, and it is the place where the sfogliatella Santa Rosa was born, a sweet symbol of Campanian pastry linked to the ancient cloistered convent overlooking the sea. A little further on, the Capo di Conca promontory stretches out with its watchtower, while high up, the town climbs among stairs, white houses, and terraces. All around is the most photographed Campania: Amalfi, Praiano, Positano, and Ravello are just a few kilometers away along the coastal road.
The Sea Festival is not a major event for thousands of spectators, and that is precisely its value. It is a village festival, free of charge, where tourists mingle with residents and where the program remains community-sized: a mass, a gesture of memory, a shared fried fish, a show on the shore. Those looking for the authentic soul of the Amalfi Coast, beyond the panoramic terraces, will find here one of the best occasions of the Salernitan summer.
The Marina di Conca dei Marini hosted one of the most evocative events of the Amalfi Coast summer on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Conca dei Marini together with the Pro Loco, is dedicated to the deep bond between the community and the sea that has always marked its history and traditions.
The program started at 7 PM with Holy Mass, followed by the traditional laying of the laurel wreath in the sea in memory of those who lost their lives among the waves: a symbolic gesture of remembrance, gratitude, and respect. The evening then continued with conviviality with the tasting of cuoppo di pesce offered by Pescheria CICA in collaboration with the Marina's restaurants, an opportunity to enhance the authentic flavors of the local catch.
Space was then given to the cultural part with the theatrical show «Libecciata al Capo di Conca», an adaptation by the Odysea company from the narrative work Trittico by Andrea Carrano, with musical adaptation and choreography by Damiano and Michela Andretta. The closing was entrusted to the live music of Damiano e i Song 'ro Sud, between Neapolitan song, folk, and tammurriata.
Event promoted by the Municipality of Conca dei Marini and the Pro Loco. Free admission.
Conca dei Marini is located on the SS 163 Amalfitana road, between Amalfi and Praiano, about 5 km from Amalfi and 40 km from Salerno. By car, the road is narrow and busy in high season: it is advisable to arrive well in advance. By bus, the SITA Sud lines on the Amalfi-Positano route stop along the main road, from which you walk down to the Marina di Conca via stairs. By sea, summer hydrofoils and ferries connect Salerno, Naples, Sorrento, and Positano to the port of Amalfi, then continue by bus or taxi. Reference airports: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi and Naples-Capodichino.
Parking spaces along the main road and in the few private car parks in the village are very limited and paid. On festival evenings, it is advisable to leave the car in Amalfi and use public transport.
Participation in the Sea Festival is free. The fish tasting is also offered by the organizers and the operators of the Marina, while supplies last.
Comfortable shoes: to reach the Marina di Conca from the main road, you have to tackle long flights of stairs. Bring a light sweater for the evening, when the breeze rises from the sea. The beach area is small, so it is best to arrive before the mass begins to find a spot.
