The patron saint of seafarers in Meta, featuring a novena, illuminations, and fireworks over the gulf

In Meta, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Naples overlooking the gulf, the Patronal Feast of Santa Maria del Lauro is the event that symbolically marks the end of summer. Every September, the local community—historically composed of sailors, shipowners, and long-haul captains—renews its devotion to the Madonna del Lauro, invoked for centuries as the protector of seafarers. It is one of the most heartfelt Marian celebrations on the entire Sorrento Peninsula in Campania, and it has retained a deeply popular character: the festival is still driven by residents and is not designed for mass tourism circuits.
The story of its origins dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries. A deaf-mute woman reportedly found a statue of the Virgin and Child under a laurel bush—laurus in Latin, hence the title "del Lauro"—and instantly regained her hearing and speech. According to tradition, at the base of the image was a golden hen with twelve chicks, a symbol of the community gathered under the Mother's protection. Every time the statue was moved elsewhere, it was found back in Meta under the same tree the next morning: this led to the decision to build the church there, which is now the Basilica of Santa Maria del Lauro, the heart of the festival and the treasure chest of the Marian relics displayed to the public each year.
Celebrations begin in early September and follow a pattern established over generations, overseen by the parish. The annual highlights include:
Alongside the liturgical program, the municipal administration and the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene organize the Meta Mare in Festa festival on the Marina di Meta, recognized as a "Quality Event." For three days, the seafront becomes a gastronomic trail with local restaurateurs, free workshops for children, live production of fior di latte cheese, street performer shows, and musical evenings. It is a time when devotion blends with conviviality: shared tables, people sitting next to strangers, and stalls selling nougat, peanuts, and graffe donuts.
The farewell is entrusted to the pyromusical show on the beach of Meta, with Piazza Madonna del Lauro and the shoreline lit up by artistic illuminations. The fireworks reflect on the water and are visible from much of the coast and the viewpoints of Piano de Sorrento and Sant'Agnello: for many emigrated locals, this is the night they return home.
Those arriving in Meta during these days will find a town dressed for a party, with arches of lights along the main streets and a constant flow of people between the Basilica and the marina. The atmosphere is authentic Southern Italian, largely untouched: the local dialect is spoken, the pace is that of the locals, and participation in the processions is genuine. It is a perfect opportunity to understand how the Sorrento Peninsula lives its maritime identity far beyond the tourist postcard.
The 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Meta promises to follow tradition: a novena in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Lauro, celebrations for seafarers on the beach, artistic illuminations in Piazza Madonna del Lauro, and a gastronomic festival on the seafront organized by the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene and the municipal administration.
Exact dates and the detailed program have not yet been published: it is recommended to check the official channels of the parish and the Pro Loco before planning your trip.
By train: The Circumvesuviana Naples-Sorrento line stops in Meta; from the station, you can reach Piazza Madonna del Lauro in a few minutes on foot. This is the recommended transport during festival evenings.
By car: Take the Castellammare di Stabia exit on the A3 motorway, then follow the SS145 Sorrentina state road. Note: during the festival, the center is closed to traffic and parking is extremely limited.
By plane or ship: Naples-Capodichino airport is about 50 km away; alternatively, hydrofoils and ferries to Sorrento, which is 4 km from Meta.
Religious celebrations, processions, illuminations, and fireworks are always free to attend. Only the tastings at the seafront stalls require payment.
Arrive early on the night of the fireworks to secure a spot on the beach or at the viewpoints. In September, temperatures remain mild, but the evening sea breeze can be cool. Accommodations on the Sorrento Peninsula should be booked well in advance.
