About Feast of the Madonna del Lauro

Every September, the town of Meta on the Sorrento Peninsula gathers to honor its patron saint: Santa Maria del Lauro, revered for centuries as the protector of seafarers. The patronal feast combines a novena in the Basilica, a candlelight procession down to the beach for a mass for sailors, the illuminations of Piazza Madonna del Lauro, and food stalls along the seafront. The grand finale is a pyromusical show on the Marina, visible from much of the Gulf of Naples.

A festival born from the sea

In Meta, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Naples overlooking the gulf, the Patronal Feast of Santa Maria del Lauro is the event that symbolically marks the end of summer. Every September, the local community—historically composed of sailors, shipowners, and long-haul captains—renews its devotion to the Madonna del Lauro, invoked for centuries as the protector of seafarers. It is one of the most heartfelt Marian celebrations on the entire Sorrento Peninsula in Campania, and it has retained a deeply popular character: the festival is still driven by residents and is not designed for mass tourism circuits.

The legend of the statue under the laurel

The story of its origins dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries. A deaf-mute woman reportedly found a statue of the Virgin and Child under a laurel bush—laurus in Latin, hence the title "del Lauro"—and instantly regained her hearing and speech. According to tradition, at the base of the image was a golden hen with twelve chicks, a symbol of the community gathered under the Mother's protection. Every time the statue was moved elsewhere, it was found back in Meta under the same tree the next morning: this led to the decision to build the church there, which is now the Basilica of Santa Maria del Lauro, the heart of the festival and the treasure chest of the Marian relics displayed to the public each year.

The religious heart: novena, enthronement, and candlelight procession

Celebrations begin in early September and follow a pattern established over generations, overseen by the parish. The annual highlights include:

  • Enthronement of the statue on the high altar of the Basilica, marking the start of the novena;
  • Candlelight prayer procession from the Basilica to the beach, with a holy mass dedicated to all sailors and the placing of a statue of the Madonna del Lauro into the sea, a gesture that speaks volumes about Meta's bond with the ocean;
  • Novena masses in the morning and evening, with days dedicated to first communions, baptisms, and wedding anniversaries (25th, 50th, 60th);
  • Charity evening in the parish garden, featuring a concert of Neapolitan songs by the Corale Santa Maria del Lauro and tastings of local products;
  • Solemn day of the patron saint, which begins at dawn with the rosary and continues with masses throughout the day, followed by a procession through the town streets accompanied by confraternities and a marching band.

The secular side: Meta Mare in Festa

Alongside the liturgical program, the municipal administration and the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene organize the Meta Mare in Festa festival on the Marina di Meta, recognized as a "Quality Event." For three days, the seafront becomes a gastronomic trail with local restaurateurs, free workshops for children, live production of fior di latte cheese, street performer shows, and musical evenings. It is a time when devotion blends with conviviality: shared tables, people sitting next to strangers, and stalls selling nougat, peanuts, and graffe donuts.

Fireworks over the Gulf of Naples

The farewell is entrusted to the pyromusical show on the beach of Meta, with Piazza Madonna del Lauro and the shoreline lit up by artistic illuminations. The fireworks reflect on the water and are visible from much of the coast and the viewpoints of Piano de Sorrento and Sant'Agnello: for many emigrated locals, this is the night they return home.

What to expect

Those arriving in Meta during these days will find a town dressed for a party, with arches of lights along the main streets and a constant flow of people between the Basilica and the marina. The atmosphere is authentic Southern Italian, largely untouched: the local dialect is spoken, the pace is that of the locals, and participation in the processions is genuine. It is a perfect opportunity to understand how the Sorrento Peninsula lives its maritime identity far beyond the tourist postcard.
