The historic San Vincenzo carnival, featuring allegorical floats and masks along Corso Italia
The Sea Carnival is the most anticipated winter event in San Vincenzo, a lively seaside town on the Etruscan Coast, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany. For decades, this festival has brought the town center to life during the heart of the carnival season, when the long, tree-lined avenue of Corso Italia fills with colors, confetti, and music. In 2026, the event celebrates a major milestone: its 60th edition, a testament to a popular tradition deeply rooted in the community.
The heart of the festival lies in the allegorical papier-mâché floats, patiently crafted by volunteers from the Sea Carnival Association in the months leading up to the parades. Giant masks, choreographies, and costumed groups march through the pedestrian center, accompanied by a marching band that sets the rhythm for the procession. It is a celebration designed for all ages, where children are the true stars, though it enthusiastically involves the town's youth and adults alike.
The Sea Carnival is, above all, a massive collective effort: behind every float are teams of volunteers, seamstresses, float-builders, and citizens who work for months in workshops set up around town. The event is held under the patronage of the Municipality of San Vincenzo and supported by the Pro Loco, the G. Verdi Philharmonic, the Vespa Club, and numerous local cultural and sports associations. This community spirit is what keeps one of the most beloved festivals on the Livorno coast alive, edition after edition.
What makes this festival unique is its setting: the Carnival takes place just steps from the beach, in a location known for its crystal-clear sea and pine forests. Visiting San Vincenzo during the Sea Carnival means combining the magic of the parades with the charm of an off-season Tuscan coastal village, when the winter light makes the Val di Cornia landscape even more evocative.
The parades are traditionally held on Sundays in February or early March, along Corso Italia and the pedestrian center. Admission is free, and the program generally includes two or more events spread over several weekends, sometimes enriched by a final grand ball.
The 60th edition of the Sea Carnival celebrated a historic milestone for San Vincenzo. The two Sunday parades on February 15 and 22, 2026, brought Corso Italia to life with floats, masks, and music, in a celebration aimed at the whole family under the theme "Peace and Freedom." The volunteers, who worked extensively in the former Bensi workshop to build the papier-mâché structures, brought four floats inspired by cartoons and video games to the streets, providing two Sundays of color and smiles.
Theme of the 60th edition: "Peace and Freedom". Event under the patronage of the Municipality of San Vincenzo and supported by the Pro Loco, G. Verdi Philharmonic, Vespa Club, and other local associations.
