The medieval fantasy and cosplay festival in the heart of Massa Marittima
When summer arrives, the historic center of Massa Marittima, a medieval jewel of the Maremma in the province of Grosseto (Tuscany), changes its face: for one day, it becomes the stage for Massae Diebus, a festival dedicated to the world of medieval fantasy and cosplay. Knights in armor, fairies, elves, dragons, and characters from fantasy films and literature fill the alleys and squares in an atmosphere suspended between historical re-enactment and fantasy imagination.
The hub of the event is Piazza Garibaldi, where at 5:30 PM the themed craft market, food areas, and a selfie zone with fantasy settings designed for photography and cosplay enthusiasts open to the public. From here, shows and entertainment begin, continuing until late evening and engaging both adults and children.
The Massae Diebus program showcases the most beloved elements of the genre: stage sword fighting by the Cavalieri di Ildebrandino, fire shows and pyrotechnic dance, wandering music that accompanies the public through the village streets, as well as jugglers, jesters, and street performers. The highlight of the evening is the famous parade of elves and fairies, followed by a competition awarding the best costume.
Massae Diebus is a highly anticipated event for the Tuscan cosplay community: those who wish to can participate in costume, helping to create the fantastic atmosphere that makes the event unique. The exceptional backdrop of Massa Marittima—with its cathedral, the Sienese Cassero, and the city walls—does the rest, turning a visit to the village into an adventure between history and imagination. The event also features a twin autumn edition dedicated to the darker tones of fantasy.
Admission is free and the family-friendly format makes Massae Diebus suitable for all ages: families, fantasy fans, and curious visitors can enjoy a unique day in the heart of the Maremma, just a few kilometers from the sea and the Metalliferous Hills.
The 2026 edition of Massae Diebus is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2026, in Massa Marittima (Grosseto), with doors opening at 5:30 PM in Piazza Garibaldi. As per tradition, the medieval fantasy and cosplay festival features a themed craft market, street music, jousts and stage combat, a parade of fairies and elves, and numerous other activities. Admission is free and visitors are encouraged to attend in costume.
The detailed 2026 line-up (artists, precise show times, and guests) will be announced by the organization in the weeks leading up to the event. The structure follows the established format of past editions; for updates, please contact the organizers ([email protected]).
