Abruzzese scrippelle and tales of emigration in Fresagrandinaria

In the heart of summer in Fresagrandinaria, a village in the Alto Vastese overlooking the hills of the Chieti province in Abruzzo, the Scrippelle Festival and Migratory Memories is much more than just a food event. Conceived and organized by the Pro Loco Fresagrandinaria APS, the festival weaves together two threads that define the village's identity: the flavor of a traditional dish and the memory of an emigration wave that touched generations of families.
Scrippelle are thin Abruzzese crepes made with eggs, flour, and water, cooked on a griddle and served in countless ways: rolled in broth, stuffed, or as the base for savory pies. In many Abruzzese homes, they are a dish for special occasions and holidays. Bringing them to the village square means sharing a domestic ritual, passed down from mother to daughter, and transforming it into a convivial experience open to everyone—residents, curious visitors, and those returning to the village in August for their holidays.
The second soul of the festival is evoked by its migratory memories. Like many inland towns in Abruzzo, Fresagrandinaria has experienced waves of emigration abroad and to Northern Italy, and many local families have relatives scattered across the globe. The event celebrates this history through stories, personal testimonies, and performances, including a show by the band Styldium. It is a way to mend the bond between those who stayed and those who left, remembering that the Abruzzese August has always been the month of returns.
The festival is part of the rich Summer in Fresagrandinaria calendar, which offers peasant tradition festivals, food and wine events like the Ventricina del Vastese Festival, outdoor cinema screenings, and the mid-August patronal feast of the Madonna Grande. Visiting Fresagrandinaria during this period means finding a lively town where squares come alive at night and local cuisine becomes an opportunity for connection.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Pro Loco: in recent years, the festival has taken place in mid-August, typically on the 11th.
