About San Buono and its Feudal Lords

Every year around August 10th, coinciding with the feast of Saint Lawrence, the village of San Buono in the province of Chieti relives its feudal past with the «San Buono and its Feudal Lords» historical re-enactment. A procession in period costumes parades the princes Caracciolo of Santo Bono through the narrow streets of the historic center, commemorating the arrival of the martyr saint's relics. The evening continues with a dinner in the village and a tasting of typical products from the Alto Vastese region, amidst illuminated districts, music, and free guided tours of the town's palaces and churches.

A dive into the Middle Ages of the Monti Frentani

The «San Buono and its Feudal Lords» historical re-enactment is one of the most cherished events of the summer in San Buono, a small town in the province of Chieti perched at about 470 meters on the left side of the Treste river valley, in the heart of the Monti Frentani in Abruzzo. Every year, around August 10th, coinciding with the feast of Saint Lawrence the martyr — patron of the town's parish church — the historic center transforms into an open-air stage where the village tells its long feudal history.

The Caracciolo family, Princes of Santo Bono

The central theme of the event is the noble Caracciolo family, who held the prestigious title of Princes of Santo Bono and ruled the fiefdom for fourteen generations until the abolition of feudalism in the 19th century. It was under their rule that the town, once known as castrum Bonum, took the form we see today, visible between the Palazzo Caracciolo — built on the ruins of the ancient medieval fortress — and the streets that climb around the church of San Lorenzo Martire. The re-enactment brings this past to life through a costumed parade featuring the attire of the feudal princes, ladies, and the court retinue.

The procession and the arrival of the relics

The heart of the evening is the historical procession that winds through the village alleys, accompanied by the re-enactment of the arrival of the relics of Saint Buono, the martyr saint to whom the town owes its name (from the original mons Sancti Boni). With flag-wavers, performers, and scenes of court life, the public is led on a journey that unites the religious and civil memory of the community. The event typically runs from late afternoon until night, with the historic center illuminated for the occasion.

Dinner in the village and flavors of the Alto Vastese

At the end of the procession, the festivities continue with a dinner in the village and a tasting of typical products from the Alto Vastese area: traditional peasant dishes, cured meats, cheeses, and local specialties served throughout the town streets. Upon request, it is possible to book a free guided tour of the historic center, discovering Palazzo Caracciolo, the church of San Lorenzo with its bell tower, and the ancient fountains.

A village to discover

The re-enactment is also an opportunity to visit San Buono and its surroundings: the 17th-century Convent of Sant'Antonio, commissioned by the Caracciolo family, and the famous Quercia del Vallone, a thousand-year-old downy oak among the most impressive in Abruzzo. A free-entry event that weaves history, popular faith, and gastronomy, offering residents and visitors an evening immersed in the atmosphere of the Frentano village.
