The Schützen festival in the park of Mitterolang
The Schützenfestival Mitterolang is one of the most beloved folk festivals in Valdaora (known as Olang in German), a municipality in the Puster Valley in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Organized by the Schützenkompanie Mitterolang, the event traditionally takes place over a weekend in late August in the park of the Mitterolang hamlet, drawing families, residents, and tourists vacationing at the foot of Plan de Corones.
The Schützen are the historical rifle companies of Tyrol, guardians of a cultural identity deeply rooted in the German-speaking region of South Tyrol. Their festivals are more than just local fairs; they represent a moment of strong community cohesion, where customs, traditional costumes, and brass band music intertwine with daily village life. In Valdaora, this heritage remains vibrant, with solemn processions, musical performances, and gastronomic celebrations marking the summer calendar.
The heart of the Schützenfestival is the live music that accompanies both days of the event. Saturday evening kicks off with the joy of Tyrolean groups, while Sunday centers around the classic mid-morning Frühschoppen, a performance by the local brass band, and the evening festivities. The park comes alive with food stalls offering traditional South Tyrolean dishes and drinks in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
Nestled among the meadows and peaks of the Dolomites, Valdaora is one of the most appreciated destinations in the Puster Valley, both in summer and winter. The Schützenfestival Mitterolang offers visitors the chance to discover the authentic soul of the village, away from the ski slopes and immersed in South Tyrolean hospitality. A free event, suitable for all ages, that combines the pride of Schützen traditions with the pleasure of gathering together.
The Schützen festival of Mitterolang returns on Saturday, August 23rd, and Sunday, August 24th, 2026, in the village park, with a rich program of live music and Tyrolean gastronomy. Free admission on both days.
Mitterolang can be reached by car via the SS49 Puster Valley road; the Valdaora-Anterselva train station is served by the Fortezza-San Candido line. The festival takes place in the village park.
Free admission. Food and drink stands are available on both days.
Valdaora offers numerous accommodation options in the Puster Valley; booking in advance is recommended during the peak summer season.
