The Schuhplattl festival in Tramin, the heart of South Tyrolean folk traditions
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the wine-growing village of Tramin an der Weinstraße, in the Province of Bolzano in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, the Schuhplattlerfest celebrates one of the most iconic expressions of Alpine folklore: the Schuhplattl, the traditional dance where performers in Lederhosen strike their hands, thighs, and boot soles in time to the music, creating a captivating rhythm. The festival is organized by the Traminer Schuhplattlergruppe at the town's covered Festplatz, a venue that ensures the event can proceed even in case of bad weather.
The Tramin Schuhplattler group was re-founded in 1975 and now counts about forty active members, including dancers, accordion players, and young students. Its mission is to pass on the art of the Schuhplattl to the town's new generations: over the years, many young people have joined, ensuring the continuity of a cultural heritage that might otherwise be lost. The festival was born from this commitment, serving as a meeting point for folk groups from across South Tyrol.
Tramin is world-famous as the home of the Gewürztraminer grape and maintains a rich calendar of events linked to local customs, from the Egetmann rites to the autumn Törggelen. The Schuhplattlerfest is part of this living tradition, offering visitors and enthusiasts an authentic immersion into South Tyrolean folk culture. For both Italian and international audiences, it is a chance to discover a dance that combines physical strength, rhythmic precision, and joy, passed down from generation to generation.
At the moment, there are no official dates for a 2026 edition of the Tramin Schuhplattlerfest. The 2025 festival marked the 50th anniversary of the Traminer Schuhplattlergruppe, a milestone celebrated with a special program. For updates, we recommend checking the channels of the association and the Tramin Tourist Office.
