The itinerant open-air cinema arrives in Linguaglossa
Schermi Cinema Multipiazza is an itinerant film festival that brings the big screen to squares, courtyards, and suburbs across Italy, specifically targeting areas where cultural offerings are scarce. The heart of the project is the cinema-van, a cinema on four wheels with a screen mounted on the side that, stop by stop, turns public spaces into open-air movie theaters. Born in 2018 from the Associazione Divina Mania, the project has grown year after year to become one of the most original examples of decentralized cinema in Italy.
In 2026, the festival celebrates its sixth edition with a widespread calendar spanning seven regions โ Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, Basilicata, Lazio, Tuscany, and Sardinia (the latter two involved for the first time) โ for over forty free events, from June until the grand finale in September in Rome. The artistic direction is entrusted to Mauro Lamanna and Gianmarco Saurino, with organizational management by Debora Leonardi and Pietro Loscavo and the support of the Fondazione Oltre. Among the many cities visited, in addition to Foggia, Catanzaro, Potenza, Grosseto, Nicosia, Palermo, and Cosenza, is Linguaglossa, a town in the Etna area in the province of Catania, Sicily.
The Linguaglossa stop brings free cinema to one of the most evocative locations on the northern side of Mount Etna. The evening open-air screenings, accompanied by meetings with guests and artists, become a festive occasion for the local community, with the public gathering in the square to share the emotion of the big screen together. The dates for the 2026 edition in Linguaglossa have not yet been announced: the complete calendar of screenings and meetings is published progressively on the festival's official channels.
Among the new features of the festival is Schermini, the section dedicated to children with afternoon screenings designed for families. It is a way to introduce younger generations to cinema and to turn public squares into places of culture and gathering for all ages.
All screenings and meetings of Schermi Cinema Multipiazza are completely free to attend. The stated goal of the festival is to break down distances and bring film culture to neighborhoods and towns where it usually doesn't reach, transforming squares into open-air theaters and creating spaces for interaction between artists and the community.
