Float parades through the streets of Scafati
The Scafati Carnival is one of the most cherished popular festivals in Scafati, a town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Sarno River, on the border with the Vesuvius area. Every year, in the days leading up to Lent, the main streets of the center are closed to traffic and transformed into a long open-air stage: allegorical floats advance slowly between two rows of spectators, followed by costumed groups, bands, and children armed with confetti and streamers.
The festival lacks the massive tourist scale of Italy's largest carnivals, but it preserves something that has been lost elsewhere: it is still a homemade carnival, built in local warehouses by artisans, volunteers, and associations working for weeks. For this very reason, the Scafati Carnival is, first and foremost, a moment of social cohesion for the community.
The heart of the event is the allegorical floats: structures made of papier-mâché, wood, and iron, several meters high, animated by mechanisms that move heads, arms, and figures. The master float-builders of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese carry on an artisanal tradition that combines sculpture, painting, scenography, and light engineering.
The established format includes two parades during Carnival week to cover different areas of the city. One crosses the central axis of Scafati, arriving in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the heart of city life; the other takes place along via Poggiomarino, in the area bordering the Municipality of Boscoreale, to involve the more peripheral neighborhoods and hamlets.
The start is usually set for 3:00 PM to take advantage of the afternoon light: the floats take several hours to complete the route, including stops, performances, and throwing sweets to the public.
For several years, the organization of the parades has been entrusted by the Municipality of Scafati through a public tender aimed at industry operators. The contract includes artistic direction, route safety, technical setups (audio, lights, stages), insurance coverage, and SIAE fees, with a minimum number of floats required for each parade. The tender also prohibits private sponsorships to guarantee the public and free nature of the event.
The administration's work is supported by the Local Police, who manage road closures and detours, and by local associations that have collaborated on the event's success over the years.
In Campania, Carnival is a season, not a single day: from the historic parades of Capua and Palma Campania to the inland village festivals, every community interprets the celebration in its own way. Scafati fits into this circuit with an urban and familiar formula, where the public is both spectator and protagonist. Visitors from out of town will find a carnival without tickets or grandstands: you stand in the street, walk alongside the floats, and stop to eat chiacchiere and sanguinaccio in the town's pastry shops.
Two events marked the 2026 Carnival in Scafati, in the province of Salerno: Tuesday, February 17, Shrove Tuesday, and Sunday, February 22, with the closing parade. In both cases, the start was set for 3:00 PM to allow the floats to travel the route in the afternoon light.
The first procession started from Piazzetta Falcone e Borsellino and went up via Genova, via Alcide De Gasperi, via Martiri d'Ungheria, and via Giovanni XXIII, before turning onto Corso Nazionale and ending in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The second parade took place along via Poggiomarino, from the border with the Municipality of Boscoreale to the intersection with via Alcide De Gasperi, bringing the party to the peripheral neighborhoods.
The organization was entrusted by the Municipality of Scafati through a public tender for a maximum amount of 12,000 euros including VAT, which required the presence of at least five allegorical floats for each parade, in addition to artistic direction, technical setups, and safety management. As per tradition, public access was completely free.
Both parades featured allegorical floats created by local master builders, accompanied by music and costumed groups. The detailed program of individual floats was not officially released.
By car: Take the Scafati exit on the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway, then follow signs for the center. On parade days, many streets are closed: it is advisable to leave the car in areas outside the route and continue on foot.
By train: Scafati is served by the EAV–Circumvesuviana network; from the station, the city center can be reached on foot in a few minutes. There are also bus connections from Naples and Salerno (EAV and SITA lines).
The parades usually start at 3:00 PM and continue throughout the afternoon.
The event takes place on the street and is free: there are no tickets or reserved seats.
The center of Scafati offers bars, pizzerias, and pastry shops where you can taste Carnival specialties. For accommodation, the widest choice is found in the nearby Vesuvius area (Pompei, Torre Annunziata) and in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, just a few kilometers away.
