The historical re-enactment of the chained Bear and the Princely Court, in the heart of the Peloritani Mountains
The Saponara Carnival, held in a small medieval village nestled on the slopes of the Peloritani Mountains in the province of Messina, is one of the most distinctive and beloved carnival celebrations in Sicily. The highlight is the Parade of the Bear and the Princely Court, a historical re-enactment that takes place every year on Shrove Tuesday, marking the culmination of the town's festivities.
The parade is rooted in an event that actually occurred in the 18th century. Legend has it that a giant bear terrorized the Saponara area, spreading fear among the villagers. Prince Domenico Alliata di Giovanni, lord of Saponara and its surrounding lands, managed to capture the animal and, to celebrate the feat, had it paraded through the streets in chains as a trophy. From that act, the pantomime was born, which is still passed down from generation to generation today.
During the performance, the Bear moves forward, restrained by ropes and chains held by tamers, accompanied by two hunters, the Prince, the Princess, and the entire Royal Court in sumptuous 18th-century costumes. The parade stages the symbolic victory of good over evil and winds slowly through the streets of the historic center, to the delight of the crowd.
In recent years, the Saponara Carnival has gained increasing prestige, accompanied by bands and folk groups from all over Italy. The event has established itself as the "Queen of the Sicilian Carnival," and the Saponara Bear was chosen as a Sicilian ambassador to the European Carnival. Parallel to this, the project "The Saponara Carnival enters the classroom" introduces this ancient tradition to Italian schools through dedicated competitions and educational initiatives.
The parade is a deeply felt appointment for the entire Saponara community and the wider Messina metropolitan area. The village streets fill with families, visitors, and especially many children, in a festive atmosphere that blends historical memory, costume craftsmanship, and popular participation. The event is supported by the Municipality of Saponara, the Pro Loco, and the Regional Department of Tourism of the Sicilian Region.
The 2026 edition of the Parade of the Bear and the Princely Court was held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, following the postponement from February 17 due to bad weather, starting at 2:00 PM. The streets of Saponara were filled with families, visitors, and especially many children.
The parade featured the usual re-enactment with the chained Bear, the tamers, the Prince and the Princess with the 18th-century court, accompanied by the band and the brogna players. Institutional representatives of the Sicilian Region also took part in the event, which is recognized as one of the most important carnival appointments on the island. The "I Mascarati" mask competition was also renewed.
