The Patronal Feast of Saint Pancras the Bishop is the most anticipated religious and popular event of the year in Valdina, a small agricultural town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. Perched at an altitude of about 250 meters between Venetico and Roccavaldina, surrounded by the Peloritani Mountains and overlooking the gulf with views of Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands, the village fills with devotees and visitors to honor its patron saint.
According to tradition, Saint Pancras of Taormina was born in Antioch in the 1st century and was sent to Sicily by Saint Peter as the first bishop of Taormina. His evangelization work and martyrdom made him one of the most venerated figures of the Sicilian Church. In Valdina, his cult has been rooted for generations: the festival is the moment when the entire community gathers with deep devotion around the statue of the saint.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession: the statue of Saint Pancras is carried on shoulders through the main streets of the village, accompanied by prayers, hymns, and the brass band. The religious program includes the celebration of the Solemn Holy Mass and moments of prayer that mark the festive day.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival is also an opportunity for meeting and socializing for Valdina and neighboring towns. The shows in the square involve both adults and children, while the evening concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the village sky with a spectacle of lights and colors. In the hamlets of Tracoccia and Fondachello and the surrounding area, one can breathe the authentic atmosphere of the Tyrrhenian Sicily, made of citrus fruits, fine grapes, and ancient farming traditions.
The festival is traditionally celebrated around July 9th, the day dedicated to Saint Pancras. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Municipality of Valdina and the parish; it is recommended to check the final program through official channels as the festival approaches.
