The patronal feast of Cefalù, blending faith, tradition, and the spectacular 'Ntinna a mare competition
The Santissimo Salvatore Festival is the primary religious and cultural celebration in Cefalù, a stunning coastal town in the Province of Palermo, Sicily. The Savior is the historic patron and namesake of the monumental Norman Basilica-Cathedral, an Arab-Norman jewel associated with King Roger II. Every year, in early August, the town of Cefalù gathers around its statue in a celebration that naturally blends sacred devotion with vibrant street festivities.
The festivities take place from August 2nd to 6th. In the days leading up to the main event, the faithful participate in the traditional novena with hymns in the local dialect at the votive shrine on Via Candeloro, in the Giudecca district. On August 2nd, the festival kicks off with the unfurling of the great Flag of Christ Pantocrator between the two towers of the Cathedral, greeted by the festive ringing of bells, firecrackers, and a brass band marching through the historic center. A particularly poignant moment is the commemoration of the town's survival during the earthquake of February 5th, 1783, serving as an occasion to thank Jesus the Savior.
The secular and most spectacular heart of the festival is the 'Ntinna a mare (the "sea antenna"), held on the afternoon of August 6th at the Pier in Piazza Marina. A horizontal "greasy pole" is set up over the harbor waters—a long pole coated in soap and grease to make it slippery—with the Savior's flag at the end. Young and old fishermen compete by balancing their way along the pole, amidst falls, dives, and the encouragement of the crowd packed along the quay, all striving to capture the flag. It is an ancient, identity-defining tradition that draws locals and visitors alike every year.
On the evening of August 6th, a moving procession accompanies the statue of Christ the Savior through the city streets, filled with prayers, songs, and blessings, returning late in the evening to the Cathedral to the cry of "Viva Gesù Salvatore." The day culminates with a fireworks display over the sea, illuminating the night sky of Cefalù and closing the festival in a blaze of light and color reflected on the water.
Experiencing the Santissimo Salvatore Festival means discovering the most authentic soul of Cefalù: a seaside village dominated by the Rocca and the Cathedral, where popular faith, centuries-old traditions, and Sicilian hospitality merge into one great summer celebration. Between solemn processions, local flavors, and the adrenaline of the 'Ntinna a mare, the event is one of the most characteristic highlights of the summer in the Province of Palermo.
The 2026 Santissimo Salvatore Festival in Cefalù is scheduled from August 2nd to 6th. The dates are confirmed, while the full hourly program has not yet been officially released.
Traditional events are confirmed: on August 2nd, the opening with the Flag of Christ Pantocrator between the Cathedral towers, firecrackers, and a brass band; in the preceding days, the novena at the votive shrine on Via Candeloro. On August 6th, the day of the Transfiguration, the highlight takes place: in the afternoon, the spectacular 'Ntinna a mare at the Pier (Piazza Marina), and in the evening, the procession with the statue of the Savior, followed by the fireworks display over the sea.
Cefalù is accessible by train on the Palermo–Messina line (the station is a few minutes' walk from the historic center and the pier). By car, take the A20 Palermo–Messina motorway and exit at Cefalù. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, about an hour away.
The festivities take place from August 2nd to 6th in the historic center and the Cathedral; the 'Ntinna a mare and the fireworks display are held at the Pier in Piazza Marina on August 6th.
Admission to all events is free. During the high season, it is recommended to book accommodation well in advance and arrive early to secure a spot on the harbor quay to watch the 'Ntinna a mare.
