The Santa Croce Camerina Carnival: masks, floats, and Iblean tradition
The Santacrocese Carnival is the most colorful and cheerful winter event in Santa Croce Camerina, a lively town in the Province of Ragusa, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. Every year, during the Carnival season, the historic center transforms into a large open-air stage where masks, confetti, music, and dancing involve families, children, and young people in an entirely free public celebration.
The heart of the event takes place between Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza degli Studi, the two hubs around which the entire day of festivities revolves. From the morning, the town's squares fill with mascots, balloons, music, and group dances designed especially for children, while in the afternoon, the lively parade winds through the streets of the center to the main square.
The Santacrocese Carnival was born and continues to grow as a community festival: it is organized by the Municipality of Santa Croce Camerina through the IV Sector (Welfare, Public Education, Youth Policies, Culture, and Leisure) in close collaboration with the local Youth Council. The involvement of young people has given new momentum to the event, with the introduction of a competition reserved for masked groups, open to groups of friends, associations, and local schools.
Experiencing Carnival in Santa Croce Camerina also means discovering a surprising territory. The town is located on the plains at the foot of the Iblean Mountains, just a few kilometers from the famous beaches of the Ragusa coast and the seaside hamlets of Punta Secca, Casuzze, and Kaukana. Not far away lie the remains of the ancient Greek city of Kamarina, founded in the 6th century BC by colonists from Syracuse. Carnival thus becomes the perfect opportunity to combine the festivities with the charm of one of the most authentic territories in south-eastern Sicily.
Free, participatory, and suitable for all ages, the Santacrocese Carnival represents one of the most cherished community gatherings of the year. With floats, masks, music, and traditional seasonal sweets, the festival renews the bond between the town and its popular traditions every year, in an atmosphere of shared joy that also attracts visitors from neighboring towns in the Iblean province.
The 2026 Carnival festivities in Santa Croce Camerina took place from February 12 to 17, with the main day on Sunday, February 15, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The Municipality issued ordinance no. 7 of February 11, 2026, to ensure the safe conduct of the event.
The day began at 10:00 AM in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II with "Disneylandia", dedicated to children with music, balloons, mascots, and group dances. At 4:30 PM, the animated parade began through the streets of the center, arriving at Piazza degli Studi for the final mask parade. From 7:30 PM, the party continued with DJ sets by Samma, Melos DJ, and Donatello Bonuomo.
Santa Croce Camerina can be reached by car via the SS115 and the provincial roads connecting Ragusa, Comiso, and Vittoria; the nearest airport is Comiso (approx. 20 km). The reference train station is in Ragusa, which is connected by local bus lines.
Events are concentrated in the historic center, between Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza degli Studi.
Access to all initiatives is free and open to citizens and visitors of all ages.
