The Santa Maria Mater Domini Feast is the patronal festival of Fraine, a small village in the Alto Vastese area of the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Abruzzo hills. Traditionally celebrated around May 31st, it is much more than a religious observance: it is a time for the entire community to reunite, and for Fraine natives living elsewhere in Italy or abroad to return to their hometown to renew bonds that time has not broken.
The heart of the devotion is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Mater Domini, set within the greenery of the Vicenne woods, just outside the village. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages: built on the ruins of a rural chapel, it was linked in Benedictine times to a small monastery, and 11th-century documents confirm it was entrusted to the Abbot of Montecassino. After centuries of slow decline, the sanctuary was restored between the 1950s and 1960s, recovering its original appearance with a wooden beam roof and stone interiors.
Popular tradition links the site to a legend: around the year 1000, the Madonna is said to have appeared to a young deaf-mute shepherdess from Fraine, who miraculously regained her speech. According to local elders, this event sparked the veneration that still fuels the feast today.
The most solemn moment is the procession that travels from the village to the sanctuary, where an open-air mass is celebrated. The festival days open with the questua (a traditional collection) through the village streets, accompanied by brass bands from neighboring towns, and conclude with the return of the Mater Domini statue to the mother church. The event also features the riffa, a characteristic local raffle, and fireworks that light up the Alto Vastese sky.
Alongside the religious rites, the evenings in the square bring a festive atmosphere: concerts, tribute bands, and DJ sets transform the center of Fraine into a meeting point until late at night. It is a balance between the sacred and the profane that defines Abruzzese patronal feasts, where devotion intertwines with the joy of being together.
