Three days of devotion, votive copper basins, and folk traditions in Celenza sul Trigno
Every year, in the first days of August, the small village of Celenza sul Trigno, perched at an altitude of over 600 meters in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Abruzzo Alto Vastese, celebrates the patronal festivities in honor of Saint Donatus. It is the most deeply felt event of the year, drawing emigrants and visitors from neighboring towns into a blend of religious devotion, folklore, and conviviality that involves the entire community.
The celebrations are traditionally spread over three days, each dedicated to a figure from the local liturgical calendar. August 6th honors Saint Nicholas of Bari, August 7th celebrates the solemnity of Saint Donatus, the town's patron saint, and August 8th is dedicated to Saint Dominic the Abbot. The highlight remains the day of the 7th, with holy masses, including the solemn one presided over by the bishop, and the afternoon procession that winds through the streets of the historic center, carrying the statue of the saint in triumph.
The most characteristic feature of the Celenza festival is the tradition of the votive basins (conche). Historically, local women carried copper basins filled with grain on their heads, festively decorated with lace, multicolored ribbons, sweets, donuts, and even moneyโthe fruits of their labor and offerings accumulated during the long winter. During the procession, young couples in traditional Abruzzo costumes, the pacchianelle, accompany the saint's statue while carrying the basins. On the evening of August 8th, the basins are partly auctioned off and partly distributed through the famous raffle of the basins, a highly anticipated and well-attended event.
Devotion revolves around the Sanctuary of Saint Donatus, built in 1598 on a much older site of worship, with an adjoining Franciscan convent that became an important center of faith for the entire Middle and Upper Vastese area over the centuries. The sanctuary houses a fine wooden bust of the saint and valuable works of art. Also linked to the cult is the ancient paraliturgical rite of weighing, through which children were entrusted to the protection of Saint Donatus, invoked against epilepsy and nervous disorders.
Alongside the religious rites, the program is enriched with band concerts, performances by musical groups in the square, evening shows, and impressive fireworks that light up the village sky, particularly at midnight on the final day. The festival is also an opportunity to taste local products and experience the hospitality of a community that, for three days, gathers around its roots.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the patronal festivities in Celenza sul Trigno have been confirmed by the Municipality: the celebrations in honor of Saint Donatus will be held from Thursday, August 6th to Saturday, August 8th, 2026. As per tradition, the three days will be dedicated respectively to Saint Nicholas of Bari, Saint Donatus the patron, and Saint Dominic the Abbot, with the main solemnity on August 7th.
The calendar includes holy masses, the procession with the statue of the saint accompanied by the votive basins carried by the pacchianelle, the raffle of the basins, band concerts, and pyrotechnic shows. The full program with times and the names of the musical groups will be released by the organizers in the weeks preceding the festival.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Celenza sul Trigno (province of Chieti, Abruzzo) and at the Sanctuary of Saint Donatus. The village is located at an altitude of approximately 646 meters in the Alto Vastese, on the border with Molise.
Celenza sul Trigno can be reached by car from the state road connecting the Trigno Valley; the nearest motorway exits are on the A14 on the Adriatic coast (Vasto North/South), from which you head inland. The reference railway station is Vasto-San Salvo.
