The century-old tradition of the Pacchianelle and Granoppoli in Palmoli

In the village of Palmoli, perched on the hills of the Vasto hinterland in the province of Chieti, the Madonna del Carmine Festival is one of the most deep-rooted and well-attended events in southern Abruzzo. It is a century-old tradition that blends religious devotion with the memory of the peasant world, in a tapestry of sacred rites and folk displays that involves the entire community and the many emigrants who return to the village specifically for this occasion.
The heart of the festival is the famous Pacchianelle and Granoppoli Parade, which takes place on the morning of the main day along the streets of the historic center. The procession consists of floats richly decorated with wheat sheaves and local produce, followed by the pacchianelle: young women in traditional peasant dress who gave the parade its name. They carry the granoppoli, elaborate compositions of wheat ears adorned with votive offerings, traditional sweets, and local products destined for the Madonna. It is a re-enactment of an ancient thanksgiving rite for the harvest, when farming communities offered the fruits of the earth to the Virgin.
The festivities take place over several days at the end of July, featuring a rich religious and secular program:
Palmoli's devotion is rooted in the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine, located in the district of the same name just outside the village. Of ancient origins and considered one of the oldest Marian sites in the area, the building was entrusted to the Franciscan friars in 1583, who built a convent next to it. The statue of the Madonna still venerated today arrived in 1854, a gift from the Marquis of Gagliati.
Organized by the Palmoli Festival Committee, the event is much more than a religious recurrence: it is a moment of collective identity where this small municipality in the Vasto area rediscovers its agricultural roots and history. Those visiting inland Abruzzo during this period will find in Palmoli an authentic example of popular tradition, far from the major tourist circuits and deeply connected to the territory.
The Madonna del Carmine Festival in Palmoli will return in 2026, renewing the century-old tradition of the Pacchianelle and Granoppoli Parade. At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made public. Celebrations are usually held in the second half of July and include religious processions, brass band concerts in the square, the morning parade of young women in peasant attire, and the auction of gifts offered to the Madonna. For updated information, please contact the Municipality of Palmoli or follow the Festival Committee's channels.
Palmoli is located in the Vasto hinterland, in the province of Chieti. By car, it can be reached from the Vasto Sud motorway exit (A14) by continuing inland along the provincial roads. The nearest train station is Vasto-San Salvo, on the Adriatic line, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
The festival takes place in the public spaces of the historic center and is free of charge.
