In the heart of summer, the municipality of San Giovanni Lipioni — a tiny village in southern Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti, perched at an altitude of 545 meters on the edge of the provincial territory overlooking the Trigno river valley that marks the border with Molise — experiences its most intense days with the patronal feast of Saints Felice Martire and Anthony of Padua. The event takes place every year on August 20th and 21st and is the moment when the small community, reduced to a few dozen permanent residents, reunites thanks to the return of emigrants and descendants of the village scattered across Italy and abroad.

San Felice Martire, the main patron

The village's main patron saint is San Felice Martire, whose feast is celebrated on August 20th. The most solemn day is dedicated to him, featuring a mass and a procession where the statue is carried on shoulders through the narrow streets of the medieval historic center. The following day, August 21st, festivities continue in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua, the second patron venerated by the community, with an evening musical event that concludes the two-day celebration.

A day marked by tradition

The festival follows a consolidated pattern that blends the sacred and the profane. The morning of August 20th opens at dawn with fireworks announcing the start of the festivities to the village; this is followed by the brass band parading through the village streets with the traditional morning tour, the solemn mass, and the procession with the statue of the patron saint. In the afternoon, the band concert enlivens the square, while the evening gives way to music and dancing with an orchestra, amidst market stalls, festive lights, and the scent of traditional sweets.

The village and its identity

San Giovanni Lipioni is one of the smallest and most picturesque municipalities in Abruzzo. Its name, according to some interpretations, derives from the Spanish los peones, meaning laborers, a legacy of the Aragonese rule over the Kingdom of Naples. Immersed in a landscape of badlands and hills on the border with Molise, the village preserves a compact historic center and a strong bond with its folk traditions, of which the patronal feast is the most authentic expression, alongside the evocative spring Festa del Majo.
