About Saint Prosper

On August 21st, Poggio Sannita, a village in the province of Isernia once called Caccavone, celebrates its patron saint, Saint Prosper. A procession, solemn mass, a band, and fireworks liven up the most important festival of the year in a village made famous by the Babaci — sculptures made from recycled materials that depict daily life — and by scherpelle, a typical local dessert.

Saint Prosper, Patron Saint of Poggio Sannita

On August 21st, Poggio Sannita, a municipality in the province of Isernia, celebrates its patron saint Saint Prosper with the most important festival of the year. The event, held in the heart of summer, follows the traditional rites of the patronal feasts of Molise: the solemn mass, the procession with the saint's statue through the village streets, the brass band, and the fireworks to conclude the day.

The Village of the Babaci

Poggio Sannita — which until 1923 was called Caccavone — is now best known for the Babaci, dozens of life-sized figures made from recycled materials and placed throughout the village to represent scenes of daily life. Created in 2021 by the creativity of Fausta Mancini and Maria Porrone, they have become a small open-air museum that attracts curious visitors and provides an unusual backdrop to the patronal celebrations.

Tradition and Taste

The Feast of Saint Prosper is also an opportunity to discover the flavors of the village: from scherpelle, the typical local dessert, to traditional Molise dishes like sagne a pezzate and cavati. Amidst devotion, folklore, and gastronomy, Poggio Sannita experiences its most heartfelt day on August 21st, in a corner of Alto Molise far from mass tourism.
