The novena, the nocturnal Holy Stairs, and the popular celebrations at the Sanctuary of Liveri
The Santa Maria a Parete Festival is the most important annual event in Liveri, a town of just over 1,500 residents in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in the heart of the Nola area, Campania. Tradition traces the origins to April 12, 1514, when the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared to the shepherdess Autilia Scala. On April 14, the Byzantine-style Sacred Effigy depicting the Madonna between two angels was discovered. The current Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Parete, also venerated as the Queen of Victories, was built around that original small temple in the 17th century.
Unlike many Italian patronal festivals, this one has no fixed date: the calendar follows the weeks after Easter and therefore changes from year to year. In 2025, the festivities took place from May 2 to 12, while in 2026 they were brought forward to April 17 to 27. It is therefore advisable to check the dates published by the Sanctuary and the Festival Committee each year before planning your visit.
The religious heart of the event is the novena, nine days of preparation during which the Sanctuary opens in the middle of the night. Celebrations take place at dawn and in the evening, with the recitation of the rosary, early morning masses, and evening liturgy, presided over by visiting priests and accompanied by the Sanctuary choir and the Schola Cantorum. It is an ancient rhythm that marks the life of the town for over a week, drawing pilgrims from across the Nola and Vesuvius areas.
The most distinctive moment is the Holy Stairs, the penitential climb up the grand staircase leading to the Sanctuary. It takes place in the middle of the night, around 3:30 AM, led by the parish priest, and is preceded the previous evening by a second climb animated by the Secular Franciscan Order. First-time visitors to Liveri are struck by the silence, the candles, and the singing that accompanies the faithful up the steps: an experience that explains the bond between the town and its Madonna better than any story.
The festival weekend concentrates the most solemn appointments: the vigil presided over by the Bishop of Nola, the Solemn Mass, and above all the procession of the Sacred Statue, which winds through the town streets accompanied by confraternities, bands, and the local population. On the final Monday, the panegyric and the supplication to the Virgin are celebrated in the square named after Autilia Scala, in front of the Sanctuary facade.
Alongside the liturgical events, a secular program is organized by the 25/26 Festival Committee together with the Pro Loco of Liveri, the municipal administration, and the Youth Forum. The «Liveri in Festa – A Return to Traditions» event brings Piazza Municipio to life with folk music, re-enactments, social gatherings, and above all tammurriate—the songs and dances with the tambourine that belong to the intangible heritage of Campania. A pageant departs from the Sanctuary and travels through the town streets to the square.
Cuisine is an integral part of the event. Tastings offer typical local products, starting with the liverese meatball, recognized as a municipal De.Co. product, and the tortano, the traditional homemade ring-shaped bread distributed with torroncini (nougat) during the festival days. These are simple, home-cooked dishes that tell the story of the rural cuisine of the Neapolitan hinterland.
Liveri is located just a few kilometers from Nola, the city of the Lily Festival, and the early Christian basilicas of Cimitile. Visitors coming for the festival can easily include it in an itinerary dedicated to Campanian popular religiosity. The Sanctuary, with its Greek cross plan, facade marked by Corinthian columns, the ancient fresco inside, and the polyptychs by Francesco da Tolentino, is worth a visit even outside of festival days.
In 2026, the Santa Maria a Parete Festival was presented by the organizers as a stage on the jubilee journey of the Liveri community: faith, tradition, and village life brought together in eleven days of events, from April 17 to 27.
The novena opened on Friday, April 17, and concluded on Saturday, April 25, with Holy Masses at 5:30 AM, 7:00 AM, and 7:00 PM at the Sanctuary, presided over by Msgr. Francesco Iannone. The Holy Stairs were celebrated twice: Friday, April 24 at 10:30 PM, animated by the Secular Franciscan Order, and Saturday, April 25 at 3:30 AM, led by the parish priest Fr. Salvatore Peluso.
On Saturday, April 25, at 8:00 PM, the Bishop of Nola, Msgr. Francesco Marino, presided over the vocational vigil. On Sunday, April 26, the 11:00 AM Holy Mass was followed by the procession of the Sacred Statue through the town streets, while on Monday, April 27, the Mass of the newly ordained priest Fr. Alberigo Rega was celebrated at 11:00 AM, with the panegyric and supplication at Piazzale Autilia Scala, and the closing Mass at 7:00 PM.
The secular program, from April 25 to 27, was managed by the 25/26 Festival Committee with the Pro Loco of Liveri, the municipal administration, and the Youth Forum: «Liveri in Festa – A Return to Traditions» brought tastings of local products, liverese meatballs, tortano with torroncini, and tammurriate to Piazza Municipio, closing on Monday the 27th with a light music show and traditional fireworks.
By car: Take the Nola exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then follow provincial roads toward Liveri (approx. 6 km). From Naples, take the Asse Mediano or the SS7bis to Nola.
By train: Nola station on the Circumvesuviana (EAV) Naples-Baiano line, then bus or taxi to Liveri.
Religious celebrations are held at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Parete, on Viale Santa Maria a Parete; secular festivities take place in Piazza Municipio, in the town center.
