About The Lily and the Palm

The Santa Filomena Historical Pageant «The Lily and the Palm» brought the story of the territory's most venerated saint to the streets of Mugnano del Cardinale, in the province of Avellino, for the first time. Ten living tableaux, over a hundred costumed performers, flag-wavers, drummers, and majorettes lead the audience from the Sanctuary to Piazza Umberto I, retracing centuries of devotion through faith, historical memory, and local identity. A free, open-air event deeply felt by the Irpinian community.

A new pageant for an ancient devotion

The Santa Filomena Historical Pageant «The Lily and the Palm» was established in 2026 in Mugnano del Cardinale, a town in the province of Avellino, Campania, nestled at the foot of the Partenio mountains. The inaugural edition took place on Saturday, May 23, 2026, transforming the town center into a grand open-air stage, with Viale Francesco De Lucia and Piazza Umberto I adorned in white and red drapes and banners—the colors of the martyr.

The concept is both simple and ambitious: to recount the story of Saint Philomena through a historical re-enactment, from her life as a young martyr in the early centuries to the contemporary echo of her cult, including the arrival of her sacred relics in Mugnano in 1805. The subtitle chosen by the organizers, «a journey through the history of Saint Philomena», perfectly captures the narrative focus of the event.

Ten living tableaux along the route

The pageant is structured into ten scenic tableaux, preceded by an introductory narrative moment entrusted to two allegorical figures: Purity and Memory. Each tableau is a small production built according to the principles of stagecraft, featuring costumed performers, painted backdrops, and a narrator whose voice is broadcast along the route, allowing the audience to follow the story's thread even while remaining in one spot.

  • Corfu, 290 AD — the princess who defied the Empire: young Philomena refuses to renounce her Christian faith before Emperor Diocletian.
  • 1802 — the discovery of the sacred relics in the Roman catacombs.
  • 1805 — the gift from Heaven: the arrival of the relics in Mugnano del Cardinale.
  • The Miracles — science yields to faith: testimonies of healings.
  • The Grace of the Throne — the devotion of the Bourbon royal family.
  • 1849 — the Pope in the land of the martyr: the visit of Pius IX to the Sanctuary and the proclamation of Saint Philomena as the second patron saint of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
  • The Modern Echo — the continuity of the cult to the present day, with the statue's passage through Saint Peter's Square in 2023 in the presence of Pope Francis and Cardinal Tagle's visit to Mugnano.

Over a hundred performers and ten local artists

The first edition mobilized more than one hundred performers, including sixteen women in 19th-century attire, thirty majorettes, and twenty flag-wavers, accompanied by drummers and musical groups. The large painted canvases serving as backdrops for the tableaux were the work of ten local artists, publicly thanked by the Pastoral Council at the end of the event—a detail that speaks volumes about the collective nature of the initiative.

The direction was entrusted to maestro Nunzia Masucci, while numerous local entities collaborated on the production: the Battenti, the Pro Loco «Rimettiamoci Insieme», the Youth Forum, Catholic Action, the confraternities, and many volunteers.

Who promotes the event

The pageant is promoted by the Pastoral Council for Philomenian Spirituality and the rector of the Sanctuary, Father Giuseppe Autorino, with the patronage of the Municipality of Mugnano del Cardinale. At the end of the first edition, Mayor Alessandro Napolitano spoke of «a beautiful page for our town» and the beginning of a journey destined to grow over the years.

Mugnano del Cardinale and Saint Philomena

Mugnano del Cardinale is one of the great pilgrimage centers of Southern Italy: its Sanctuary, overlooking the main square, has housed the body of Saint Philomena since August 10, 1805, and is the primary place of worship in the world dedicated to the martyr. The Philomenian devotion marks the life of the town and culminates every year in the August celebrations, with the historic manifestation of the «battenti» who reach the Sanctuary on pilgrimage. The Historical Pageant joins this tradition with a different, more theatrical and educational register, designed also for visitors arriving from further afield.

Why it is worth the trip

It is a town-scale re-enactment: no tickets, no barriers, history passing right by your doorstep. Those arriving from Naples or Avellino will find an authentic popular event in just over half an hour's drive, featuring meticulous costumes, live music, and a strong bond with the religious identity of Western Irpinia.

The first edition, May 23, 2026

The debut of the Santa Filomena Historical Pageant «The Lily and the Palm» was prepared for months by the Sanctuary's Pastoral Council and the associations of Mugnano del Cardinale. Viale Francesco De Lucia and Piazza Umberto I were decorated with white and red drapes and banners, while ten local artists created the painted canvases that served as backdrops for the scenic tableaux.

The evening opened at 6:00 PM in Piazza Umberto I with flag-wavers, drummers, and majorettes; at 6:30 PM, the pageant departed from the Sanctuary and traveled along the main avenue, stopping at each tableau to bring the highlights of Philomenian history to life. The conclusion, around 8:00 PM, brought everyone back to the square for the final scene with Pius IX, Cardinal Antonelli, and the Bourbon royals.

At the end, Mayor Alessandro Napolitano thanked the community for the success of the event, defining it as «the beginning of a long journey». The Carabinieri, Municipal Police, and Civil Protection collaborated on the event, along with numerous administrators from neighboring towns.
