The White Fig of Cilento PDO takes center stage in the alleys of Orria
Every year in the second half of August, the small village of Orria, in the Province of Salerno, dedicates four evenings to the fruit that best tells its agricultural history: the White Fig of Cilento PDO. The event is called Ficoscia, a food and wine market exhibition that combines tastings, local product sales, and live music in one of the most authentic areas of inland Campania.
The formula is what makes Ficoscia different from the many summer festivals in Cilento: the culinary trail winds through the alleys of the historic center, and the inhabitants themselves open up old houses, stables, and courtyards to welcome visitors. You dine outdoors or inside private spaces made available by the community, in an atmosphere that feels more like a village party than a commercial event. It is a simple yet effective way to discover the urban fabric of the village, which would otherwise remain invisible to passersby.
The white fig is one of the gastronomic symbols of Cilento: cultivated for centuries on the inland hills, it is consumed fresh, sun-dried, in jams, or transformed into desserts and liqueurs. In Orria, it is the common thread of the entire menu, from appetizer to dessert, with recipes that start from Cilento tradition and reinterpret it in a new way every year. Alongside fig-based dishes, you will find other local specialties, from cheeses to homemade pasta.
Ficoscia was born from the initiative of the «la Mimosa» cooperative, a group of local women passionate about cooking who decided to share their gastronomic knowledge, now active as the La Mimosa 22 association. The event is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Orria. The organization is entirely local and voluntary: much of the value of the festival lies in the direct involvement of the inhabitants, who cook and host.
Orria is located in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, a short distance from the sea but already in a hilly dimension made of olive groves, fig orchards, and small stone villages. The municipal territory also includes the hamlet of Piano Vetrale, known for the murals that decorate its facades. For those visiting Campania in summer, Ficoscia is the perfect opportunity to leave the Cilento beaches for an evening and discover the hinterland when it is most vibrant.
The event is traditionally held at the end of August, over four evenings from Thursday to Sunday. The 2026 edition is announced from August 20th to 23rd in the Cilento festival calendars; the detailed program of the evenings, including the names of the musical groups, is usually released a few weeks before on the event's social media channels.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Ficoscia are reported in the Cilento festival calendars published in June 2026: the event will be held in Orria, in the Province of Salerno, from Thursday, August 20th to Sunday, August 23rd, 2026, confirming its usual placement in the second half of the month and the four-evening format.
As per tradition, the food and wine trail develops through the alleys of the historic center, with spaces made available by the inhabitants (old houses, stables, and courtyards) transformed into dining rooms. The absolute star remains the White Fig of Cilento PDO, present throughout the menu, from appetizer to dessert, alongside dishes of Cilento cuisine.
The gastronomic part is accompanied by market exhibition stalls, dedicated to fresh and dried figs, jams, and other local products, and live folk music that accompanies the evenings. The detailed program, with stand opening times and artist names, is usually published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Orria can be reached by car from the SS18 (exit Vallo Scalo / Vallo della Lucania), continuing along the provincial roads of inland Cilento: from the coast, the journey takes about half an hour. The nearest train station is Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo, on the Tyrrhenian line; the reference airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
