About Santa Claus Castle

Every winter, the medieval fortress of Palombara Sabina, just outside Rome, turns into a free-entry Christmas village. Inside the halls and dungeons of Castello Savelli, Santa's house, the Ancient Elf Academy, children's workshops, and markets featuring local Sabina crafts and products come to life. Outside, amidst lights and music, the event features shows, gospel choirs, parades, and family attractionsโ€”a tradition that has already drawn over 25,000 visitors in previous editions.

A medieval castle transformed into a Christmas village

Santa Claus Castle is the most anticipated Christmas event in Palombara Sabina, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the heart of the Sabina region of Lazio. For several days between December and Epiphany, Castello Savelliโ€”an ancient fortress overlooking the town and the valley belowโ€”sheds its historical monument persona to become the home of Santa Claus, his elves, and an entire enchanted village built across courtyards, gardens, and underground chambers.

The initiative is promoted by the Palombara Sabina Senior Center together with the Il Magico Castello Savelli association, with the stated goal of showcasing the natural and monumental beauty of the area through events that engage the entire community. In the 2019 and 2021 editions, the event surpassed 25,000 visitors, becoming one of the reference Christmas destinations in the Roman province alongside the villages of the Lucretili Mountains.

The route: from the Spianata dei Signori to the dungeons

The tour begins at the Spianata dei Signori, where an ice rink surrounded by lights and music is set up, along with a traditional antique carousel. From there, the path continues through illuminations, decorated Christmas trees, an artistic nativity scene, and stalls offering traditional sweets.

Inside the castle, visitors walk through magical paths marked by Christmas music and colorful lights, leading to Santa Claus's house, where children can deliver their letters and take a souvenir photo. The ancient prisons are transformed into artistic rooms set up for the occasion, while the Ancient Elf Academy hosts readings and stories for the little ones.

Markets, crafts, and the flavors of Sabina

In the castle garden, typical wooden huts host the Christmas markets: artisanal products, local food and wine specialties, traditional sweets, hot drinks, and cotton candy. Sabina is a land of PDO extra virgin olive oil and rural produce, and the stalls become a concrete opportunity to discover local producers.

  • Santa Claus's House โ€” meeting, letter delivery, and souvenir photo
  • Christmas Markets โ€” crafts, local products, and delicacies
  • Playful and educational workshops for children
  • Ancient Elf Academy โ€” readings and ancient stories
  • Ice rink and antique horse carousel
  • Artistic Nativity scene and guided tours of the castle

Shows and entertainment for all ages

Each opening day is animated by magic shows, dances, parades featuring Santa Claus, elves, superheroes, and princesses, as well as street performers and marching bands. There is no shortage of concerts, with the participation of gospel choirs from the Tiburtine area, and events dedicated to comics and costumes with the Comix Event. Environmental awareness activities, such as the recycling workshop, complete a program designed for families with children but also enjoyable for adult audiences curious to visit the manor in an unusual guise.

Why it's worth the trip

Less than an hour from Rome, Palombara Sabina offers a rare formula: a Christmas market hosted inside a real medieval castle, with free access and a layout that enhances the architecture rather than hiding it. For those visiting Lazio during the holidays, the event is easily combined with a walk through the historic center, the nearby Abbey of San Giovanni in Argentella, and excursions in the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park.

Santa Claus Castle โ€” edition 2026

The final stretch of the 2025-2026 edition of the Santa Claus Castle took place around Epiphany: Castello Savelli in Palombara Sabina reopened its doors on January 3, 4, and 6, 2026, for the final events of the festival. Christmas markets, Santa's house, the Ancient Elf Academy, children's workshops, and shows accompanied visitors until the closing, all with completely free admission and continuous hours from 10:00 to 19:00.

Epiphany days at Castello Savelli

With the openings on January 3, 4, and 6, 2026, the third edition of the Santa Claus Castle in Palombara Sabina came to a close. The medieval manor maintained its full setup until the very last day: illuminated paths, artistic rooms created in the ancient prisons, an artistic nativity scene, and wooden huts in the garden.

What was there

The days reprised the festival's format: meeting with Santa Claus and delivering letters, playful and educational workshops for children, readings at the Ancient Elf Academy, markets with Sabina crafts and local products, food stalls, hot drinks, and traditional sweets. Outside, on the Spianata dei Signori, the ice rink and the antique horse carousel continued to operate.

The entertainment alternated between magic shows, dances, and parades with Santa Claus, elves, superheroes, and princesses, along with street performers and marching bands. Admission to the castle, the markets, and all initiatives remained free.
