The parish community celebration at the Basilica in Valle Giulia, Rome
The Sant'Eugenio Patronal Feast is the annual event where the community of the Basilica of Sant'Eugenio in Rome celebrates its patron saint. The basilica is located at Viale delle Belle Arti 10, in the Pinciano district, just steps away from Valle Giulia, the National Gallery of Modern Art, and the gardens of Villa Borgheseโa corner of Rome where 20th-century architecture blends with greenery and the city's great museums.
This is not a food festival or a large city-wide event, but a parish feast in the most authentic sense: an evening when parishioners, local families, and regular churchgoers gather together, first in the church and then in the parish facilities. It is one of the many patronal feasts that dot the calendar of Rome and the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital in the Lazio region during the month of June.
The dedication of the basilica to Pope Eugenius I, a 7th-century Roman pope, is no coincidence: Eugenius was the baptismal name of Eugenio Pacelli, also known as Pope Pius XII. The church was commissioned as a gift from the faithful worldwide for the 25th anniversary of his episcopal consecration.
Hence the dual memory the feast carries: that of the patron saint and that of the church's dedication. For pastoral reasons, the community celebration is scheduled in the days immediately following June 2nd to allow for the widest possible participation.
The program is essential and focused entirely on the evening. It begins with a solemn Mass at 7:00 PM in the basilica, animated by the parish community; immediately after, at 8:00 PM, the parish feast begins, featuring a convivial gathering that brings together families, young people, catechists, Caritas volunteers, and visitors. There are no tickets or registrations; entry is free.
Even beyond the feast, Sant'Eugenio is worth a visit. The travertine facade with its three portals leads to a three-aisled interior, marked by paired columns, a transept, and side chapels, in a style that reinterprets Roman classicism with a 20th-century touch. The interior houses a remarkable collection of 20th-century Italian art, with works by Giacomo Manzรน, Pericle Fazzini, and Francesco Messina, as well as mosaics by Ferruccio Ferrazzi. In the memory of Romans, the basilica is also linked to famous funerals, such as that of the actor Totรฒ, and the visit of Pope John Paul II on March 3, 1986.
Attending the patronal feast is also a great excuse to discover a neighborhood that tourists often pass through without stopping. Within a few minutes' walk, you will find the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, the foreign academies of Valle Giulia, and the northern entrance to Villa Borghese. A sunset stroll, before or after Mass, is perhaps the best way to understand why this part of Rome is so beloved by its residents.
The community of the Basilica of Sant'Eugenio celebrated its patron saint on Friday, June 5, 2026, a few days after the liturgical anniversary of June 2nd, which also marks the anniversary of the consecration of the high altar by Pius XII in 1951.
The evening was divided into two parts: the solemn Mass at 7:00 PM in the basilica and, following that, the parish feast from 8:00 PM, with a convivial meeting of the community in the parish spaces. Participation was free and open to all.
The dates and times were confirmed by the calendar of special celebrations published on the official website of the parish, which is entrusted to the Prelature of Opus Dei.
