The patronal feast and traditional fair held on September 1st in Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata

In the heart of the Val Vibrata, at the far north of Abruzzo and just a stone's throw from the border with the Marche region, the town of Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata (Province of Teramo) celebrates its patron saint, Sant'Egidio Abate, every year. The event falls on September 1st, the day the liturgy commemorates the Athenian-born abbot from whom the town takes its name. It is the most cherished appointment on the town's calendar, a moment when the community reconnects with its religious and agricultural roots.
Alongside the religious dimension, the patronal feast has always been intertwined with the historic market fair that takes over the streets and squares of the center on September 1st. Stalls offering local products, handicrafts, household goods, and various wares transform the town into a large open-air market, following a tradition rooted in the agricultural vocation of the Val Vibrata. For generations, the fair has served as a meeting and trading point for the inhabitants of Sant'Egidio and surrounding areas.
The religious program includes celebrations in honor of Sant'Egidio Abate, the town's patron, with the participation of local parishes. In recent years, the event has been enriched with moments dedicated to the community: in particular, an evening reserved for notable Sant'Egidio citizens, designed to honor the individuals and stories that have brought prestige to the town. The festival is also linked to other events in the Sant'Egidio summer, from traditional village festivals to sporting events promoted by the municipal administration and the Pro Loco.
The festival is also an opportunity to rediscover the flavors of the Abruzzo region: local gastronomy, garden produce, and traditional rural dishes accompany the fair days, amidst the aromas of village cooking and Val Vibrata specialties. It is the most authentic face of inland Abruzzo, where towns proudly preserve their customs.
More than just an event, the Sant'Egidio Abate Fair and Patronal Feast is a cornerstone of the identity of Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata: a way to renew, year after year, the bond between the town and its patron, and to keep alive a fair tradition that unites faith, community, and rural culture in northern Abruzzo.
The 2026 edition of the Sant'Egidio Abate Fair and Patronal Feast is expected, according to tradition, around September 1st, the day Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata celebrates its patron saint. At the moment, the official program has not yet been released. As every year, the historic market fair in the town center and religious celebrations in honor of Sant'Egidio Abate are expected. For definitive dates and details, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata and the Pro Loco.
