About Sant'Apollinare Feast

On July 23rd, Sant'Apollinare, a small village in the lower Liri Valley in the province of Frosinone, celebrates the patron saint from whom it takes its name. The Sant'Apollinare Patronal Feast is a religious and community event with a strong sense of identity. The highlight is the Holy Mass at the Parish of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where the entire community gathers to honor the Bishop of Ravenna, venerated here since the days of the Benedictine monks of Montecassino, who built a chapel dedicated to him in the Middle Ages.

The saint who gave the village its name

Few Italian towns can claim to bear the name of their patron saint: Sant'Apollinare, a municipality of about 1,800 inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, is one of them. The village's origins date back to the 10th century, when Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Montecassino built a chapel here dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, Bishop of Ravenna and a martyr of the early centuries of Christianity. Around that place of worship grew the community that still renews its bond with its protector every July 23rd during the patronal feast, also known as the Community Patronal Feast.

The July 23rd celebration

The heart of the day is the Solemn Holy Mass celebrated at 11:00 AM in the Parish of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the town's main church, rebuilt after the destruction of World War II with its characteristic exposed red brick walls. During the liturgy, the hymn dedicated to the saint resonates, with which the faithful invoke his spiritual guidance over the community. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Sant'Apollinare together with the parish, is free to enter and open to all, attracting many emigrants originally from the town and inhabitants of the neighboring towns of the Valle dei Santi.

Sant'Apollinare, a village in the lower Liri Valley

The village stands at an altitude of 57 meters in the lower Liri Valley, in southern Lazio, where the Liri and Gari rivers meet to form the Garigliano, which marks the border with Campania. It is a land of ancient history and painful memories: during World War II, Sant'Apollinare was located along the Gustav Line and suffered severe bombing, which cost the lives of 160 civilians between 1943 and 1944. For those sufferings, the Municipality was awarded the Silver Medal for Civil Merit in 2004. The patronal feast thus also takes on the value of a shared memory: the community that gathers around its saint is the same one that managed to rebuild the village from the rubble.

A community of traditions

The July feast is the main identity event of a calendar that in Sant'Apollinare includes other deep-rooted traditions: the Carnival, the evocative Living Passion on Palm Sunday, and the Palio delle Contrade in September, which pits the town's districts against each other. The parish church and the small garden chapel also house relics of Saint Benedict, Saint Scholastica, and Saint Andrew the Apostle, testifying to the deep bond with the nearby Abbey of Montecassino.

Why participate

  • Experience an authentic patronal feast in southern Lazio, far from tourist circuits.
