Montattico Penance Festival

A vow spanning nearly two centuries

The Montattico Penance Festival is one of the most intense and moving religious traditions in southern Lazio. It is celebrated every year on July 29th in the small hamlet of Montattico, within the municipality of Casalattico, in the province of Frosinone, nestled in the heart of the Comino Valley. This is not a food festival or a typical town fair; it is a penitential rite rooted in a dramatic historical event, which the community has continued to perform identically for nearly two centuries.

The cholera of 1837

In the summer of 1837, a cholera epidemic struck the villages of Montattico, Mortale, and Casalattico, sowing death and despair. Powerless against the disease, the population turned to the Madonna della Pace, the town's patroness. On July 29th of that year, the inhabitants of Montattico made a vow to the Virgin with a solemn penitential procession; according to tradition, the cholera ceased to claim victims from that moment on. Ever since, that vow has been renewed annually with the same gravity.

What makes this event unique is its austere intensity. Participants don a white tunic, wear a rope around their neck and a crown of thorns on their head, and walk barefoot along the ancient path and the village streets, leading to the Church of the Madonna della Pace. It is an act of faith stripped of all spectacle, where physical suffering becomes a form of prayer and shared memory. Spectators are not witnessing a folkloric event staged for tourists, but an authentic devotional act that the small community experiences with profound solemnity.

Montattico, the Comino Valley, and the Ciociaria

Montattico is a hamlet of Casalattico, the least populous municipality in the Comino Valley, perched at an altitude of about 420 meters between the Obachelle and Marro massifs. According to local tradition, the town's name derives from Pomponius Atticus, a wealthy Roman friend of Cicero who owned a villa in this area. Immersed in the greenery of the Ciociaria, on the border with Abruzzo and Molise, this land preserves a heritage of rites, churches, and folk traditions that slow tourism is currently rediscovering. The Penance Festival is perhaps its purest expression: a fragment of Lazio's religious history that remains vibrantly alive.
