About Assumption of Cassino

Every year from August 14th to 16th, Cassino gathers around its patron saint for the Feast of the Assumption, one of the most heartfelt events in this martyr city of lower Lazio. At the heart of the celebrations are two ancient and moving rites: the Inchinata, where bearers bow the statue of the Madonna in three solemn gestures, and the Coronation, which commemorates the historic moment in August 1945 when the statue was carried through the ruins of the war-torn city. Between pontifical masses, evening processions, and public performances, Marian devotion meets popular celebration.

A festival in the heart of the martyr city

The Feast of the Assumption is the most important patronal celebration in Cassino, a city in the province of Frosinone known worldwide for the Abbey of Montecassino and the dramatic events of the Second World War. Every year, around Ferragosto (mid-August), the community gathers at the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta to honor the Virgin, the city's patron saint, through a series of solemn rites and popular festivities that bring the center to life from August 14th to 16th.

The Inchinata and the Coronation

The most intense and characteristic moment of the festival is the dual rite of the Inchinata and the Coronation. During the Inchinata, the portatori (bearers)—supported by entire families who pass down the honor of carrying the litter—bow the heavy statue of the Madonna three times, a gesture of supplication and mercy for the city. This is followed by the Coronation, a ceremony during which the Bishop places a crown on the head of the statue. The rite traditionally takes place on the morning of August 14th along the central Via del Foro.

A thread of memory: from 1945 to today

The Coronation finds its roots in August 1945, when, with the war just ended, the statue of the Assumption was carried in procession through the ruins of a Cassino razed to the ground by bombings. Since then, the rite has become a symbol of the city's spiritual and civil rebirth: for the people of Cassino, celebrating the Assumption means reconnecting the present to the reconstruction and faith that guided the city's restart after the destruction.

The religious program

The celebrations are preceded by a novena, with the recitation of the rosary and evening mass in the Co-Cathedral. The eve opens with a Marian candlelight procession; on August 14th, the Inchinata and Coronation take place, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Sora, Cassino, Aquino, and Pontecorvo. On August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption, the calendar includes morning mass, the solemn pontifical mass in the late afternoon with an act of entrustment to the Madonna, and in the evening, the grand procession through the streets of the center, concluded by a blessing and fireworks.

Popular festivities

Alongside the religious dimension, the Assumption is also a lively local festival: for several evenings, the squares of Cassino host musical performances, dance orchestras, tribute bands, and local artists, while lights and stalls welcome families and visitors. The celebrations involve traffic changes in the historic center, with transit and parking restrictions in the streets affected by the processions.

Cassino and southern Lazio

Experiencing the Feast of the Assumption is also an opportunity to discover Cassino and southern Lazio: from the Abbey of Montecassino, guardian of Benedictine memory, to the sites of war history, and the flavors of Ciociaria cuisine. A festival that unites faith, history, and identity in one of the most evocative territories of the region.
