The winter festival of Ville del Monte, featuring animal blessings, blessed bread, and rural traditions
In the heart of winter, when the mountains of the Upper Garda are wrapped in the cold, the village of Ville del Monte, in the municipality of Tenno (Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige), comes alive for the Sant'Antonio Abate Festival. It is one of the most deep-rooted and well-attended celebrations in the area: for a few days, the streets of the small village fill with music, scents, and colors, capturing the simple, authentic atmosphere of the most genuine village festivals.
Saint Anthony the Abbot, the protector of animals and farmers, is a figure deeply linked to the rural culture of the Trentino valleys. The church dedicated to him in Ville del Monte, built in the 15th century and established as a parish in 1955, houses frescoes and a precious 16th-century altarpiece, serving as the spiritual hub around which the festival revolves. The solemn celebrations in honor of the saint include the historic distribution of blessed bread and hot broth, symbols of sharing and protection that have always been associated with the patron saint.
Among the most iconic moments of the festival is the blessing of the animals, a beloved event held on Sunday. Residents and visitors arrive from all over the area with their pets to receive the blessing, in a ritual that combines popular faith, affection, and respect for the rural world that has shaped the identity of these places.
The festival is organized by the Compagnia S. Antonio of Ville del Monte, a network of volunteers who renew the invitation to participate every year to "keep our roots alive." More than just a religious celebration, the Sant'Antonio Abate Festival is a collective ritual that strengthens the bond between people and their village, celebrating folklore, respect for traditions, and a deep sense of belonging in one of the most characteristic villages of the Upper Garda Trentino.
The 2026 Sant'Antonio Abate Festival was held in Ville del Monte, a hamlet of Tenno, from Friday, January 16 to Sunday, January 18, 2026, featuring the program that makes this event one of the most beloved in the Upper Garda Trentino area.
Solemn celebrations in honor of the saint accompanied the historic distribution of blessed bread and hot broth, while on Sunday, the highly popular blessing of the animals was renewed, with residents and visitors arriving with their pets. There was no shortage of traditional tournaments, the festive sound of bells, evenings of music and conviviality, and the "El vim del tennese" competition dedicated to local winemakers. The raffle saw its final draw on Wednesday, January 21. The Compagnia S. Antonio of Ville del Monte renewed the invitation to participate to "keep our roots alive."
