The king of Romagna reds takes centre stage in the historic centre of Modigliana
Sangiovese in Festa is the event that celebrates the symbolic wine of Romagna every spring in the heart of Modigliana, a small village in the Apennines in the Province of Forlì-Cesena, along the picturesque Tuscan Romagna area. For an entire weekend, the historic centre, from the scenic Piazza Vittorio Veneto to the streets and small squares of the town, comes alive with stalls, taverns, tastings, and gatherings centred around the king of Romagna reds.
The true common thread of the festival is Modigliana's Sangiovese, a mountain wine produced on higher, cooler hills compared to the Romagna plain, which is why it expresses an elegant and recognisable profile. The heart of the event is the Stella dell'Appennino group, founded in 2017 to promote wine production in the Modigliana Apennines: twelve local wineries that host tastings and share stories about their wine throughout the festival days.
In addition to wine glasses, the event offers a rich and varied programme that blends food and wine, culture, and entertainment:
The festival is also an opportunity to visit Modigliana and its heritage: the Civic Museums, including the Don Giovanni Verità Civic Museum and the Municipal Art Gallery, remain open with extended hours during the event. Strolling through the ancient walls, wine glass in hand, with the backdrop of itinerant music, is the best way to get into the spirit of this village festival carefully organised by the Pro Loco of Modigliana.
For the 2026 edition, Sangiovese in Festa returned to its full three-day format, from April 24th to 26th, bringing tastings, music, and culture back to the historic centre of Modigliana. The festival was organised by the Pro Loco of Modigliana with the involvement of local wineries and various local entities.
The programme included the 'Calici a primavera' dinner within the ancient walls, the musical evening in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, tastings and the Sunday wine competition, as well as art and photography exhibitions and extended opening hours for the Civic Museums.
Evening in Piazza Vittorio Veneto organised by the CL-HUB association:
Throughout the weekend, art and photography exhibitions were set up, and the Civic Museums (Don Giovanni Verità Civic Museum and Municipal Art Gallery) observed extended hours.
Modigliana can be reached by car from the Via Emilia, exiting at Faenza or Forlì and continuing towards the Apennines along the Marzeno valley. The most convenient train station is Faenza, on the Bologna-Rimini line, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
The event is held in the historic centre of Modigliana, with its heart in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the adjacent streets and squares.
For the Friday evening 'Calici a primavera' dinner, booking is mandatory by calling 349 8132021. Tastings and access to exhibitions are largely free; for updated information, email [email protected].
