About San Vito Pantelleria

Every June 15th, the San Vito district, nestled in the hinterland of Pantelleria, celebrates its patron saint with a simple yet deeply felt festival. The day begins with the Rosary and Holy Mass in the historic 16th-century church, followed by a convivial gathering where the local community—the "santuvitióti"—comes together for tastings, live music, and traditional Pantescan dancing. It is the first patronal feast of the island's summer cycle, a celebration of faith, tradition, and community spirit promoted by the Circolo Unione Agricoltori with the patronage of the Municipality of Pantelleria.

The festival that inaugurates the Pantescan summer

The San Vito Festival is held every year on June 15th in the San Vito district, a small rural hamlet on the island of Pantelleria, in the province of Trapani. Located about 242 meters above sea level and just over three kilometers from the main town, it marks the first of the patronal feasts that define the summer of the island's districts—a calendar of celebrations that stretches from mid-June through autumn, touching every corner of the island.

Faith and popular devotion

The religious heart of the day is the Church of San Vito, a building with ancient roots dating back to the 16th century. In the late afternoon, the faithful gather for the recitation of the Rosary and Holy Mass in honor of the martyr saint. This spiritual core is central to the identity of this farming community, whose inhabitants are affectionately known as santuvitióti.

Conviviality and the Pantescan dance

Once the religious ceremonies conclude, the festival takes on a joyful, secular tone. The evening continues with a convivial gathering featuring gastronomic tastings, live music, and, above all, the traditional dance, which is deeply cherished by the locals. The festival serves as a perfect opportunity to pass this popular practice on to younger generations and visitors alike, fostering an atmosphere of cheer that unites the entire community.

A community coming together

Described as "a simple yet deeply felt and lived-in celebration," the San Vito festival is above all a moment of connection. It is organized by the historic Circolo Unione Agricoltori San Vito, in collaboration with the Associazione Barbacane and under the patronage of the Municipality of Pantelleria. For those wishing to discover the most authentic soul of the island, far from the usual tourist routes, this is the ideal occasion to explore the history and traditions of the Pantescan hinterland.

Pantelleria and its districts

Situated within the Pantelleria Island National Park, a UNESCO-recognized landscape heritage site, the San Vito district preserves the rural architecture of the dammusi and the culture of the "alberello" (head-trained) vine, which is also recognized as an intangible heritage of humanity. The San Vito Festival is the first milestone of a summer rich in events, from the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul to the Wine Festival, the Cappero Fest, and finally the Feast of San Fortunato, which closes the season in autumn.
