The patronal feast of Fallo, the heart of summer in the Val di Sangro
Perched at an altitude of 575 meters in the Val di Sangro, the tiny village of Fallo — home to just over a hundred souls in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Abruzzo mountains — dedicates its most popular annual event to its patron saint, San Vincenzo Ferreri. Devotion to the Dominican saint from Valencia dates back to the late 18th century, and the community celebrates it with particular warmth on the first Sunday and Monday of August, when the town streets come alive with people and music.
The most solemn moment is the procession: the 18th-century statue of San Vincenzo Ferreri, of Neapolitan craftsmanship and kept in the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, is carried on shoulders through the stone alleys of the village, between the two ancient districts of Borgo Valle Vecchia and Borgo Pietra Antica. A brass band accompanies the pageant, families wave from their balconies as the saint passes, and the day concludes in a spirit of community.
The secular program develops around the religious core, centered in the scenic Piazza IV Novembre, made famous by its yarn bombing installations — trees and corners of the village wrapped in colorful crochet creations by the women of Fallo. For the festival, the square hosts concerts and evenings of traditional Abruzzese folk music, exhibitions, and food and wine tastings featuring typical products of the Middle Sangro valley. There is no shortage of convivial moments that make the festival a true homecoming for the entire community.
As in many small towns in the Abruzzo Apennines, summer in Fallo is the season of return: numerous emigrants come back to their hometown specifically for the feast of San Vincenzo Ferreri and the Madonna del Perpetuo Soccorso, reuniting with relatives, friends, and age-old traditions. This is the true soul of the festival: a bond that, for a few days in August, brings an entire diaspora home and breathes life back into the village alleys.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Fallo and its surroundings: the two historic churches, Palazzo De Lollis — the family home of poet Alceste and philologist Cesare De Lollis — and the landscapes of the Val di Sangro, just a stone's throw from Lake Bomba, between the towns of Villa Santa Maria, Borrello, and Montelapiano.
In 2026, Fallo once again prepares to celebrate its patron saint, San Vincenzo Ferreri. According to established tradition, the festivities focus on the first weekend of August: the first Sunday (August 2, 2026) and the first Monday (August 3), with activities beginning as early as the previous Saturday. The religious heart of the festival is the procession of the 18th-century statue of the saint through the village alleys, accompanied by a band; the secular program takes place in Piazza IV Novembre, featuring concerts, exhibitions, and tastings of typical Middle Sangro products.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including artist names and evening schedules, will be released by the Municipality of Fallo and the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival, as is customary for patronal celebrations in small Abruzzese villages.
