About San Vigilio Festival

Every year in early July, the village of Spiazzo in Val Rendena celebrates the San Vigilio Festival, honoring the patron saint of the Diocese of Trento. The event combines a solemn mass in the parish church, a procession with the saint's statue through the village streets, and a community gathering in Piazza San Vigilio. Tradition holds that Saint Vigilius suffered martyrdom right here in Val Rendena, and for centuries, Spiazzo has preserved his memory in one of the diocese's jubilee churches.

A patronal feast in the heart of Val Rendena

The San Vigilio Festival is the patronal feast of the municipality of Spiazzo, located in Val Rendena, in the province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige. Every year in early July, the community gathers to honor Saint Vigilius, patron saint of the city and the Diocese of Trento, in a day that weaves together religious devotion, popular tradition, and community life.

The bond with Saint Vigilius and his martyrdom in Val Rendena

Devotion to Saint Vigilius in Spiazzo is rooted in ancient tradition. According to accounts passed down through the centuries, it was in Val Rendena that Bishop Vigilius, having arrived to evangelize the alpine communities, suffered martyrdom at the beginning of the 5th century: he threw a statue of the pagan deity Saturn into the Sarca River and was beaten to death by pagans with wooden sticks and clogs—the same clogs that became his iconographic attribute. A primitive shrine was built on the site of his martyrdom, which evolved into the current San Vigilio Parish Church, now one of the diocese's jubilee churches and home to precious frescoes.

The festival program

The festival day follows a well-established ritual. In the morning, around 10:00 AM, a solemn Holy Mass is celebrated in the parish church, followed by the traditional procession with the saint's statue through the village streets. Around noon, the community gathers in Piazza San Vigilio for an aperitif and the social moments that conclude the morning festivities.

A community coming together

Beyond its religious dimension, the San Vigilio Festival is an opportunity for Spiazzo to strengthen the bonds of the Val Rendena community. In recent years, the festival has also hosted celebrations dedicated to local youth, particularly athletes who have distinguished themselves nationally and internationally in sports such as skiing, hockey, mountain running, and lifesaving swimming. The festival thus confirms its role as a core identity event, capable of uniting faith, historical memory, and local pride.

Spiazzo and Val Rendena

Nestled along the course of the Sarca River, at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello, Spiazzo is one of the villages of Val Rendena, a tourist area linked to Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo. The San Vigilio Festival offers visitors the chance to discover an authentic Trentino, defined by living traditions and a deep connection to the land.
