Trentino choirs resonate in the Council Hall of Castel Stenico
InCanto a Castello is the touring festival that brings Trentino choirs to perform every summer in the historic residences managed by the Castello del Buonconsiglio. The stop at Castel Stenico, in the municipality of Stenico (Comano Terme, province of Trento), is one of the most beloved: the castle's Council Hall, with its intimate acoustics, welcomes the voices of the choirs in a solemn and atmospheric setting.
The festival is a collaboration between the Federazione Cori del Trentino and the Castello del Buonconsiglio museum, supported by the Provincial Department of Culture and in partnership with the Centro Servizi Culturali Santa Chiara and the Coordinamento Teatrale Trentino. The goal is twofold: to showcase provincial castles through the excellence of Trentino choral singing and to offer visitors a unique way to discover the region's historical and artistic heritage, combining song with the exploration of frescoed halls.
Located about 35 kilometers from Trento, along the road rising toward the Giudicarie, Castel Stenico was for centuries the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Trento. Today, it is a branch of the Castello del Buonconsiglio Museum and houses 14th-century frescoes in the Chapel of San Martino, an archaeological section, a collection of inlaid furniture, and an important collection of antique weapons. Listening to choirs in this context means experiencing music in dialogue with history.
Each afternoon of the festival features two different choirs, chosen from the many groups active in the Trentino region: from popular and alpine-inspired choirs to more refined polyphonic ensembles. It is a journey through the tradition of mountain singing, consisting of multi-part harmonies, sacred repertoires, and songs that tell the story of valley life.
The Stenico stop is part of the broader summer calendar of Trentino castles, which also brings InCanto a Castello to Castel Thun and the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento. Those who love choral music and places steeped in history will find an extra reason to head up to Stenico, in the green heart of the Giudicarie Esteriori, on these Sunday afternoons in July and August.
In 2026, the InCanto a Castello festival stops at Castel Stenico on two Sunday afternoons, both starting at 5:00 PM in the manor's Council Hall. Each event features two local Trentino choirs, in a program that alternates between popular mountain singing and polyphonic repertoire. The concerts are part of the summer calendar of the Buonconsiglio castles and are accessible with the castle admission ticket.
The festival continues during the same period in other historic Trentino residences, including Castel Thun and the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento.
