The patronal feast of Vicoforte, blending faith, tradition, and a pilgrimage to Alba
The San Teobaldo Festival is the most cherished event in Vicoforte, a small town in the Monregalese area of the province of Cuneo, in the heart of Piedmont. Every year, at the end of May, the entire community unites to honor its patron saint over two days that weave together religious devotion, civic identity, and popular tradition.
San Teobaldo Roggeri was born in Vicoforte and later moved to Alba, where he lived a life of service and charity, eventually achieving sainthood. He is venerated as the patron of Vicoforte and co-patron of Alba: an ancient bond that the festival renews annually, making this much more than a simple local celebration. His official proclamation as patron dates back to 1966, when the Sacred Congregation of Rites accepted the joint request from the municipal administration and the bishop of the time.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn High Mass celebrated in the Parish Church of San Donato, followed by a procession toward the chapel and square dedicated to San Teobaldo, where a civic ceremony is held in the presence of the mayor, authorities, and citizens. The following day is dedicated to the historic pilgrimage to Alba: the people of Vicoforte travel to the city, where they are welcomed by the mayor and municipal administration before gathering around the saint's tomb for a celebration in the Cathedral with the bishop. It is a tradition rooted in the centuries that testifies to the deep bond between the two communities.
Numerous local associations, from the Pro Vicoforte to the Alpini Group, as well as parishes and local schools, play a vital role in the festival. The event thus becomes an opportunity for the community to reconnect, reward those who have distinguished themselves, and renew the sense of belonging that unites Vicoforte with its saint. Included in the rich calendar of local events, the San Teobaldo Festival remains the quintessential identity-defining appointment for the town.
The celebrations take place in Vicoforte (CN), with Mass at the Parish Church of San Donato and a procession toward the San Teobaldo chapel and square. The following day's pilgrimage is held in Alba, at the Cathedral.
Vicoforte can be reached by car via the A6 Turin-Savona motorway (Mondovì exit), then continuing toward the town. The nearest railway station is in Mondovì, just a few kilometers away.
