The Monferrato flavors market in the heart of the Pepper Festival
San Satiro Agri-Food is the grand food and wine showcase that defines the final day of the historic Pepper Festival in Frassineto Po, a small town in the Province of Alessandria overlooking the Po River in Piedmont. On the Sunday of the San Satiro feast, the streets and squares of the historic center fill with stalls, scents, and colors: it is the moment when this Monferrato village celebrates its agricultural and rural identity.
The heart of the event is the agri-food and craft market, organized by the Frassineto Po Pro Loco in collaboration with CIA - Italian Farmers. Along the stalls, you will meet local farmers, producers, and artisans offering regional excellence and niche products, with the pepper taking center stage as the absolute protagonist, a symbol of this festival for over half a century.
The most anticipated and spectacular appointment remains the flipping of the polenta in the late afternoon: a massive polenta is turned out from a huge copper cauldron onto a large table and then served with pepper stew and sausage, in a collective ritual that draws hundreds of visitors every year. It is the moment that encapsulates the spirit of the festival, made of conviviality, tradition, and rural generosity.
The Frassineto Po Pepper Festival was born in the 1970s and has grown to become one of the most beloved gastronomic events in the Casale area and the Alessandria Monferrato. Animated by the numerous volunteers of the Pro Loco, it combines musical evenings, dinners based on local specialties, and sporting activities throughout the entire weekend, while the Sunday of San Satiro, with the Agri-Food market, represents its most iconic moment.
Visiting San Satiro Agri-Food means discovering an authentic corner of the Monferrato, a land of hills, vineyards, and villages overlooking the Po. Between one stall and another, you can visit the Church of Sant'Ambrogio and breathe in the atmosphere of a community that makes its cuisine and products a source of pride and hospitality.
Frassineto Po is located in the Province of Alessandria, in the Monferrato, a few kilometers from Casale Monferrato. By car, it can be reached via the SS31 bis; the nearest train stations are Casale Monferrato and Valenza, connected to the main Piedmontese lines.
Access to the event and the market is generally free. Dinners and typical dishes (polenta, pepper stew, sausage) are available for purchase at the food stands, with no reservation required.
We recommend attending in the late afternoon to witness the flipping of the polenta. Wear comfortable clothing and suitable shoes for walking through the streets of the historic center.
