Devotion, grain-laden tractors, and major concerts in the Fortore village
In Molinara, a village of just over 1,500 residents overlooking the Fortore Valley at an altitude of 582 meters in the province of Benevento (Campania), the San Rocco Patronal Feast is more than just a religious observance: it is the time of year when the town recognizes itself and gathers as one. The liturgical memorial of the pilgrim saint from Montpellier falls on August 16th, and around this date, the San Rocco Committee organizes a summer program that weaves together popular devotion, music, and rural traditions.
The oldest heart of the festival is the Matinata: on the night of August 15th, a procession departs from Piazza Vittoria and travels through the main streets of the center, stopping under homes to invite families to the morning Mass in honor of San Rocco. It is a collective awakening, filled with music and voices, which has preserved its original form: those arriving in Molinara for the first time are surprised to find the town wide awake and out in the streets in the dead of night.
On the morning of August 16th, after the solemn Holy Mass, the statue of the saint is carried in procession, accompanied by a parade of tractors decorated with grain. It is the most recognizable image of the Molinara festival: an agricultural offering that tells the story of a territory where cereal farming and the cultivation of the Molinara potato have defined the lives of generations. In the evening, the guest band concludes its concert with the Hymn to San Rocco performed before the statue: one of the most moving moments of the entire week.
Alongside the liturgical events, the San Rocco Committee organizes a secular program spanning several days: brass band concerts, featuring the Banda Città di Molinara and guest groups like the Banda Città di Lanciano, theatrical performances and comedy nights at the Pasquale Santoro Municipal Theater, dance nights, 90s revival parties, exhibitions in the historic center, and a grand fireworks finale. The main stage is set up in Piazza San Rocco, which in recent years has hosted nationally acclaimed names: Roberto Vecchioni, Luca Carboni, Arisa in 2024, Fabrizio Moro in 2025, and, for 2026, the Campanian rapper Clementino.
San Rocco is also the call that brings emigrants back home. Since the post-war period, Molinara has seen thousands of families leave, many toward Australia—the Molinara community in Adelaide is the largest—and even today, in August, the square fills with relatives returning from the other hemisphere, dialects mixed with English, and family reunions planned months in advance. The town has even dedicated a Migrant's Feast to this bond, and it is not uncommon for books and exhibitions on the village's migratory memory to be presented during the patronal feast days.
The Municipality of Molinara is located about twenty kilometers northeast of Benevento, on the borders with Foiano di Val Fortore, San Giorgio La Molara, and San Marco dei Cavoti, in a landscape of wheat, olive groves, and windy ridges. It is a corner of the Sannio region still largely untouched by mass tourism, where the cuisine remains tied to local raw materials: the potato, which is also the star of a dedicated festival organized by the Pro Loco in August, as well as cheeses, durum wheat, and extra virgin olive oil. Those planning a trip during these days can line up multiple events in the same village, as the Molinara August calendar is particularly packed.
The San Rocco Patronal Feast does not have the scale or ambitions of a major festival: it is an authentic village feast, where the concert of a famous singer coexists with the procession, the brass band, and tables set at home. Visitors from outside will find a square full until late at night, illuminations, stalls along the streets of the center, and warm, direct hospitality. It is worth arriving at least the day before August 16th so as not to miss the Matinata, which remains the most defining moment of the entire festival.
The San Rocco Patronal Feast in Molinara (province of Benevento, Campania) has its central day on August 16, 2026: it is the liturgical feast of the patron saint, with the solemn Holy Mass and the procession along the streets of the town accompanied by the traditional parade of grain-laden tractors.
The main musical event was announced at the beginning of June: Clementino, one of the most well-known voices of Italian rap and a television personality, will perform on Tuesday, August 18th on the stage set up in Piazza San Rocco. A concert that, like in previous years with Arisa and Fabrizio Moro, will attract audiences from all over the Sannio region and the Fortore municipalities.
In recent editions, the festivities have opened a few days before August 16th, with brass band concerts, shows at the Pasquale Santoro Municipal Theater, the Matinata on the night of the eve, and the final fireworks. For 2026, the complete program has not yet been released: this page will be updated as soon as the San Rocco Molinara Committee publishes the day-by-day schedule.
By car: Molinara can be reached from Benevento in about 30-40 minutes (about twenty kilometers) by taking the route toward San Giorgio La Molara and the Fortore Valley. From Naples, follow the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway to the Benevento exit, then take local roads toward the Fortore: a total of about 80 kilometers.
By train and bus: the reference station is Benevento, connected to Naples, Caserta, and Foggia; from there, continue with extra-urban bus lines to the Fortore municipalities or by rental car. During the festival days, public transport service is reduced: it is better to travel with your own vehicle.
The historic center is small and largely closed to traffic during processions and concerts. It is advisable to leave your car in the free spaces at the entrance to the village and continue on foot: from any point, Piazza San Rocco can be reached in a few minutes.
The events take place in the square and on the streets of the village, and the organizers have not announced paid tickets for the concerts. For last-minute confirmations, it is best to follow the channels of the Comitato San Rocco Molinara.
The village's accommodation offer is limited: farmhouses, B&Bs, and small facilities can be found in the neighboring municipalities (San Marco dei Cavoti, San Giorgio La Molara, Foiano di Val Fortore) and in Benevento. In August, demand increases due to the return of emigrants: booking well in advance is the best choice. On the table, try the dishes based on the Molinara potato, Fortore cheeses, and handmade pasta.
