About San Rocco Parolise

In Parolise, a small village in Irpinia perched at 546 meters among the Fiano di Avellino vineyards, the San Rocco festival is the most cherished event of the summer. From the novena leading up to August 16th, the liturgical feast day of the Saint from Montpellier, the village gathers around the bust housed in the Church of San Vitaliano Vescovo: solemn masses, a procession through the town center, brass band concerts, musical performances in the square, and a fireworks display to cap off the longest night of the year in Parolise.

The patronal feast of Parolise

Every year in mid-August, the small municipality of Paroliseโ€”home to just over six hundred residents at an altitude of 546 meters in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia and Campaniaโ€”comes to a standstill to honor Saint Roch of Montpellier, the protector of the local population. It is the most attended event of the year: those who have emigrated return home, families reunite, and the streets of the historic center, rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake but still retaining its medieval layout, fill with festive lights and crowds.

Saint Roch, the pilgrim saint

The cult of Saint Roch, a 14th-century French pilgrim invoked as a protector against epidemics, is widespread throughout Southern Italy. In Parolise, the bust of the Saint is kept in the parish church of San Vitaliano Vescovo, a 17th-century building adjacent to the clock tower, and is carried in procession on August 16th, the day of his liturgical commemoration. This devotion coexists with that of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, the so-called "Sangue Sparso" festival, which the village has celebrated on the first Sunday of July for over 150 years: two events that together define the community's summer.

How the festivities are structured

The calendar documented by the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino describes a solemnity spanning about ten days, with both religious and secular components:

  • Novena: starting August 8th, with the rosary at 6:30 PM and Holy Mass at 7:00 PM in the parish church.
  • August 15th: Assumption Holy Mass at 10:00 AM.
  • August 16th: Arrival of the brass band in the morning, Holy Masses at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, Solemn Mass at 6:30 PM, followed by the procession of the statue of Saint Roch through the streets of the village.
  • Evening of August 16th: Musical performance in Piazza Don Marciano Marino and, at the end, a fireworks display around midnight.
  • August 17th: Holy Mass at the cemetery at 6:30 PM in suffrage of the deceased and a final musical evening in Piazza Giovanni Falcone.

The procession of August 16th

The most intense moment is the late afternoon Solemn Mass, which in recent editions has been presided over by Monsignor Arturo Aiello, Bishop of the Diocese of Avellino, followed by the exit of the statue. The procession winds through the town accompanied by the band and faithful carrying candles; it is a ritual that has been repeated identically for generations and, in such a small village, effectively involves the entire population. Visitors from outside find a simple and direct welcome, far removed from the more tourist-oriented patronal festivals of the Campanian coast.

Music in the square and fireworks

The secular part of the festival is entrusted to the band and evening shows. In editions documented by the provincial portal, the musical service was provided by the Cittร  di Montemiletto Brass Band, while the evenings in the square featured the Compagnia Daltrocanto, with a repertoire of traditional folk music, and a DJ set by Joe Clemente Dj Delirio for the closing night. The 16th of August concludes with the highly anticipated fireworks display, which illuminates the valley around midnight: it is the moment when the village pours into the streets and the one that remains most vividly in the memory of those who attend.

Parolise, between Fiano di Avellino and Monte Tuoro

The festival is also an excellent opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Irpinia. Parolise is just 13 kilometers from Avellino, and its territory falls within the production area of Fiano di Avellino DOCG, one of Italy's great white wines; the village also overlooks the natural area of Monte Tuoro, a Site of Community Importance. The local gastronomic tradition is that of the Irpinian mountains: Podolico caciocavallo, smoked caciocavallo, scamorza, mozzarella, and ricotta, often the stars of family tables during the festival days.

It is therefore advisable to check the notices of the San Vitaliano Vescovo Parish, the channels of the Municipality of Parolise, and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino in the weeks leading up to Ferragosto.

San Rocco Parolise โ€” edition 2026

For the summer of 2026, the Municipality of Parolise and the San Vitaliano Vescovo Parish have not yet released the calendar of solemn festivities in honor of Saint Roch of Montpellier. The liturgical commemoration of the patron saint remains fixed on August 16th, the day of the procession of the statue through the streets of the Irpinian village; the exact dates of the novena and the program of musical evenings will be announced, as usual, in the weeks preceding Ferragosto.

2026 Edition: program not yet published

As of the update date of this page, no official program for the 2026 San Rocco Festival in Parolise, in the province of Avellino, has been found. The fixed reference remains August 16th, the liturgical commemoration of Saint Roch of Montpellier, the protector of the village, but neither the municipality nor the parish has yet made public the dates of the novena, the times of the celebrations, or the names of the artists expected for the evenings in the square.

What to expect

Based on the editions documented by the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, the festivities usually take place over about ten days between the beginning of the novena and August 17th, alternating religious moments โ€” rosary, holy masses, solemn mass, and procession of the Saint's bust โ€” and secular events such as the morning brass band concert, evening musical shows in the square, and the fireworks display at the end of August 16th.

Where to check

To find out the final program, it is advisable to follow the notices posted in the village, the social media channels of the Municipality of Parolise, the communications of the San Vitaliano Vescovo Parish, and the events section of the Sistema Irpinia portal, which publishes the complete calendar of patronal festivals in Irpinia every year.
